Default Hot rubber smell

Every time I drive the 03 vet for fifty or so miles and stop, there is a odor similar to hot burning oil and or rubber. No, there has been no burning of the tires, no emg brake on and no hard use of the brakes. I have noticed a slight oil residue on the leading edge of the left rear, over the axle, down side of the exhaust pipe but nothing on the right side.
But when opening the hood, the smell seems to come from that area also and I first thought it was the fan belt. Anyone got any ideas?
If some one has lost the differential seal, was there any particular odor (outside of depression) noted where oil may be spraying onto the hot exhaust system?

This is a good place to start looking.

Oil residue on the over the axle exhaust pipe could also indicate a leaky rear differential.
