in order to have the Competitive Driving mode available.... your C5 must have the Active Handling system (not to be confused with Traction Control). C5's built from 1998 thru 2000... AH was an option (1997 C5's - AH wasn't available at all, Thanks for the correction Jack). Starting 2001, AH became standard.
Gen 1 AH (on C5's between 19987 and thru 2000) required you to be stopped to activate the mode. Gen 2 AH (on C5's from 2001 thru 2004) allowed the mode to be activated while moving.
For those with 1997 - 2000 C5; you must first determine if your car has the AH option. If it doesn't, then there's no Comp Driv mode.
I've found that it sometimes takes up to 10 seconds of button pushing for the mode to be enabled.

Unless you have the active handling option, you won't be able to activate the competition mode. Active handling was introduced mid-model year 1998 so not all cars will have it. It will say active handling above the traction control push button on the console. You can also look for option code JL4 on the option decal.
Mine does not say anything So i guess i cant enjoy it llike you guys.
don't feel bad. my car has it, but it hates life... In other words, something is wrong with it and I really don't give enough of a crap to fix it. It will violently jerk the car the other direction trying to "fix" it from getting sideways, but it's no where near the smooth transition it's supposed to be. Then, it says "service active handling".
I'd rather just turn it all off anyway. That way, I'm prepared for when the car spins tires or gets sideways and I know how to react! Not, "oh, competetive driving mode is on, I'm good" then two seconds later be going "HOLY CRAP WTF was THAT????"
