Default Different ZO6 wheels

Our 2002 ZO6 came with 3 wheels made by Speedline and one wheel made by another manufacturer. The different wheel has thinner spokes with more squared edges on the spokes. It is also a slightly different color. Has any one else had this happen? I do not know if the different wheel is a 2001 or just a second supplier to GM for the Corvette ZO6. It is stamped GM on the backside. The Speedline wheels have casting numbers actually cast into the backside of the spokes.  :nonod:

At the beginning of the '02 model year they were using wheels different from the '01 versions .. very similar, but a little different. A couple of months into production they ran into delivery problems, and started using the '01 wheels again. Both are good wheels, but delivering a single car with a little of both seems tacky. I think I'd talk to the dealer about getting the odd one replaced with the proper match.

The 2002 wheels are supposed to be manufactured by a different process called spun casting. They are supposed to be stronger. I believe that the Speedline wheel is supposed to be the 2002 wheel. I don't know about which ones are made by the normal casting process or by a forged process. It is my understanding that a forged wheel is normally a lighter than a normal cast wheel. I was told by a wheel shop out here on the West coast that the thinner spoke wheels have had some cracking problems on the end of the spoke near the outer part of the rim.

I have kind of a dilemma! I live in California, bought the ZO6 from a dealer in Michigan, and owned the car for 6 weeks before I discovered that the wheels were different. I was taking the wheels off the car and recording the casting numbers off the back side and found one wheels markings was different and then compared two wheels side by side. The difference is readily noticable on the face of the wheel when you look at them side by side. I hauled the wheels 234 miles one way and was to get them chrome plated. I ended up doing a exchange to get 4 wheels the same. Now the chrome wheel shop is charging me a core charge until I get the wheel exchanged by General Motors. I am attempting to do that at this time.

The 2002 Z's are using Speedlines which are spun cast aluminum.

You can tell in that the 2001 spokes are a tad thinner and sharper edged. To really tell, if you feel the back of the spokes, the 2001s are solid forged aluminum all around. If you feel the back of a 2002 spoke, the backside is undercut somewhat, or dugout, or whatever you want to call it that accounts for some of the weight loss... Just feel the backside of the 2001 spokes and the back of the 2002 spokes and you'll understand.

I hope that they didn't mismatch your rims but with GM, anything can happen. Let us know what the outcome of your findings were.

Also, the reason they went with the Speedlines was purely due to the fact that they had a supply problem in '01 and didn't want that happening again with '02. Ironically, that still ended up with a supply problem and had to go with '01 wheels for a short run.

The '02s are definitely lighter than the '01s. But no where have I heard any claims by GM that they are 'stronger' than the '01s. IMO, Forged over Spun.

I don't know all about wheels. Just have read that normally a forged wheel is lighter than a normal cast wheel. Also read that a cast wheel is supposed to be stronger than a forged wheel. And that a spun cast wheel is lighter than a normal cast wheel. I forgot where I read the article but a lot was made out of the fact that the 2002 wheels were lighter than the 2001 and that they were spun cast. My (marked in the casting) Speedline wheels have recessed areas on the back side of the spokes where the casting numbers and GM markings are.

Also read that a cast wheel is supposed to be stronger than a forged wheel.

Sorry but that is incorrect.

A forged wheel is the stronger of the 2 (as in forged / drop forged tools etc very strong)

I would think that the GM owes you on this one. Should be able to have it taken care of at any dealer but the fact that it's now off the car and not mounted with stock tires (I'm assuming), it may be hard to prove to the dealer it came this way.

I must have the only car that GM shipped with two different kinds of ZO6 wheels ! I am still using the origional tires and did record all of the casting numbers of the origional wheels. I have sent the one different wheel back to the dealer in Michigan that I purchased the car from. When I tried to take the problem to a local dealer here, as I was instructed to do by GM warranty, I was told that the origin dealer should have caught the problem when the car was delivered to him. He then should have filed a transportation claim to get the problem solved before the car was sold. The dealer inspection is the last fail safe in the quality control and in this case also failed to catch the mistake. It looks for now like they are going to make the exchange. It is just disappointing to see this happen. I love this car. It is wonderful, fantastic machine. :flag

Forged wheels are definitely stronger. They are solid aluminum, but are slightly heavier. The '02 wheels were also a cost cutting measure as well as a weight saving measure, but both look . Either way I would insist on a matching set though.

You have a '01 Z06 wheel mixed in your set....NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! You need to straighten this out at the dealership level....PERIOD. Good Luck. Fubu/Les :)

In addition you may want to pay a refudable core charge to the chromer until your original dealer comes through with the proper '02 wheel...Fubu/Les

Absolutly love this car. :chevy :flag :) And I am ok with the ZO6 wheels. :yesnod: I am just sad that this kind of thing can happen  :nonod: with such a great machine. :chevy I just wanted to put this out so that others might be aware and could potentially have the same problem. :mad  This morning I got word from the Michigan dealer that I bought the car from. They are shipping a wheel to match the other three in exchange for the one different that I shipped to them already. :yesnod: :) So I guess my problem is solved. :yesnod:

While not as serious as a wheel mix up, The last time I was at the Dealer getting an oil change I witnessed a New Mag Red vert being delivered to an elderly man. I was admiring the new car when I noticed that the center caps were for the PAINTED wheels yet the car had POLISHED wheels! I felt obliged to tell the man. I did and watched him bitch out the salesman for the proper caps. I felt good afterward. I had done my duty :flag This wheel mixup is unacceptable.

I have wanted a Corvette all of my life. My first car was a 58 Impala with the 348 cu. in. V8. That got me going on chevys. I like all Corvettes and if I had the money I would have all three models of the C5. Why stop there  I would also have one each of all of the previous models too! :flag But being realastic and the 56 year old guy that I am, if I can only have one, it is this wow :chevy ZO6 hardtop. Now that I have it, it is the one and only for me. :yesnod: I can appreciate and understand why each Corvette owner loves his or her choice of model. From the looks of yours you take great pride in it as others do with there choice.
