Trying to replace stock steering wheel with a stock wheel with leather accent colors. So far we have broke one of the two puller stems (3) times. First was a Mack tool, next, a no name puller and last was the GM factory tool (from the dealership's tool inventory). Used both hand tightening (with socket) and a air gun to tighten puller, both broke the tool. Tried hammering around the column stem, while tightening puller but no luck at breaking the wheel from the column stem. Any other suggestions?
Get some unbroken tools around and try again. This time tighten the forcing screw in the center of the puller very very tight by hand, so it is pulling on the wheel and pushing the steering shaft, next while the forcing screw is very tight, use an air hammer with a blunt hammer bit and pound on the end of the forcing screw (the end with the socket hex obviously). It should come loose and shouldnt break anything. If you dont have an air hammer then use a regular hammer but its wont work as well. Oh, and wear safety glasses, no matter what.
Your not going to like this but the only time ive ever heard of this much trouble removing a str wheel was when somone literally "centered the wheel" by removing the thing and turning it a few splines and then using the retaining nut and a hammer to force it back on and ruined the steering shaft and the wheel in the process. Good luck.
