Took a nice ride, stopped for an hour to take in some scenery, returned to the car(1999 auto), started it, moved from park to drive and no go. The rransmission goes from park thru the different selections with no movement. I can roll the car forward and backward like it is in neutral. There was no tranny whines, poor shifting, loss of bodily fluids. The shifter feels like it has become unattached. Can this be possible or is something else suspect?
With search or search this forum in C5 tech (in the red banner), use keywords "automatic transmission shifter broken" or similar. You should find some material to research.
Sounds like the cable has detached or shifter mechanism broke. If you look at the shifter on these A4's you'll see a lot of plastic inside your console and parts that attach the cable to the tranny. It's a somewhat common problem that's been posted on this forum. Hope you got it home without too much trouble.
I agree, the last owner of my Vette had that same issue. If you do a search I bet one of the threads that come up is from him. I have a receipt from the owner that states the dealer replaced the transmission shift cable at a price of $450.
Thanks guys for the input. i was able to get ahold of my repair shop on Monday, and as usual it's a common problem with this vintage. Why didn't any of this stuff break when the other guy owned it?? he says it's the transmission cable. $175 for the part and 3 hours to put it in. Gotta love it.
