Nice job and good explanation of your method.
I do mine "up in the air" but it's on a lift so not sure if that's fair. I have done lots of exhaust installs over the years on C5s and have foound this method to give me quick and sure-fire results in getting tips lined up for both single and multi-piece catback systems.
The NXT setup I installed on the wife's coupe.
The Ti's the NXT's replaced
Dual Borlas I had years ago.
The GHL's I recently installed on my C5
On multi-piece setups, I always use wide band clamps - much more robust and virtually invisible if you position them correctly.
This is the method I use to establish a single plane for the tips. The jack allows me to fine tune the positioning and height of the tips.
