coming from the mustang world, you had to have a handheld tuner for a shop to tune your car....but, on here i have not read one thing refering to anyone needing a handheld for them to be abe to tune your car
You can send your computer out to get flashed/tunned. I can't remember the name of the site vendor, but according to most that have got theirs done, it is a very good tunner.
You can buy a handheld tuner for your car, Superchips, Diablo, ETC.
The next step is send your ECM to one of the supported vendors, with your list of upgrades or lack of upgrades and they will fine tune a tune for you. Less expensive then the above.
Last, you can have your car dyno tuned, which will extract the most performance out of your car....Most expensive.........

im mainly talking about getting it dyno tuned. do you need a handheld for them to tune it?
You can do a basic handheld like the Diablo, to a mail-order tune, to a dyno tune with custom or commercial versions of tuning software you can buy, diy with HP Tuners or EFI Live (steep learning curve) or have a pro dyno and road-tune your PCM with one of the above mentioned software tuning packages. That order of tuning scenarios points to increasingly more accurate tunes.
I have HP Tuners and EFI Live and have done some tuning of both our C5s. It's a long learning process if you decide to do it yourself but very rewarding.
