Default Does your cruise control do this??

Does your cruise control not remember a new setting after accelerating?

Let's say I'm driving along the highway with the cruise control set to 65. I decide that 65 isn't really the speed I'd like to drive, so I give it a little more gas until I'm at 70. I press the SET button, and the CC is supposed to change its setting to the new speed, 70.

Instead, it reduces the old setting to 64. So when I release the gas, the car drifts down to 64. (Just what the person I just passed expects, no doubt!)

I know a quick tap is supposed to drop one's setting one mph, but if you're already going faster than the CC is set, it's supposed to remember that according to the manual:

Use the accelerator pedal to get to the higher
speed. The speed will not begin to increase
until sufficient pedal travel is achieved. Press the
SET button at the end of the lever, then release the
button and the accelerator pedal. You will now
cruise at the higher speed.
I've tried holding the button for a variety of different durations. Sometimes it works, and the DIC simply shows the new speed. But other times when I press SET, the DIC will read CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGED and then when I release it, it sets a new speed as I desired. And sometimes I have the problem above, which is very frustrating.

I had the entire left control stalk replaced a while back for the same problem, and it worked for a while; now it's back. Has anyone else seen this?

(ps:I already know I can tap the brakes or turn the CC off/on. But I shouldn't have to do that.)

Nope, mine doesn't do that!

I'm reactivating this thread because the problem seems to be happening more frequently.

Goal: While the CC is engaged, accelerate to a new speed, press the SET button and have the CC hold at that new speed.

Results: One of the following:
  1. The CC will set to the new speed. (good)
  2. CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGED will appear in the DIC, then the new speed will display. (good.)
  3. The CC set speed will decrement one mph. (bad.)

I've even held the SET button for several seconds, and upon release, it just drops one mph.

Try instead of using the gas, hold the accelerate button to the right until you reach the speed you want. You may just have an intermittent contact on the set button.

Problem I have noticed was that when I am in 6th @ 65mph its at about 1200rpm (2.73 rear). The cruise will stay on for only a few seconds before deactivating. I can only assume it is due to the low RPM. I will try out your method and see what happens.

That's what I've done out of frustration. It's better to bump the ACC five times than to curse the SET five times.

Nope my '01 doesn't do that either. If I raise the speed with the gas and then re-activate the cc it holds at the speed reached with the gas pedal.

Every GM cruise control that I have ever had responds the same as s'noJob original entry.

I thought the set button originally sets the cruise speed, but until the cruise is released the set button just bumps the speed down and the resume/accelerate bumps the speed up from the original setting.

This is correct. To reset or go 5 MPH faster you must either gas it and hold the button or bump it ( resume) 5 times slowly

Going to have to check mine out and see what it does. If I want to set the cruise to a higher speed, I normally just tap the brake, accelerate to the desired speed and then push the set button on the stalk.

I've never had a cruise control that accepts a higher speed once it is set and I use the gas pedal to attain a higher speed. Either increase the speed with the resume / accel button or disengage and reset.
