I have an 03 ZO6 I got a few months back and third gear occasionally grinds. I'm wondering if GM replaces the whole transmission or if they rebuild it in shop or send it out? I'm a tech at BMW and we just replace the complete transmission, just wondering how GM does it to determine if I should take it in or just do it myself. Thanks.
Rebuild. If you can do it yourself you can source all the parts from RPM or Tick, or have it rebuilt.. I just had a performance rebuild done, I needed all new synchros, and 5th and reverse gear.

Well mine should be a warranty issue through the dealer .. I just don't want some guy rebuilding it that has no clue what he's doing. If that's the case I would do it myself.

Rick knows what he is doing, so you don't have to worry about that. I would be more worried about a GM Tech rebuilding it myself.
If it's under any extended warranty, bring it in and they'll swap in a new trans.
If you're paying for it, don't have a shop put in a stock trans. It'll cost you more than having a built trans put in. My friend has a stock 02 Z and he had a new trans put in. They charged him $4K for the new trans and labor. He could have gotten a built T56 for that much installed.
Ah, the car is still under GM warranty .. I'd rather not have a dealer tech rebuild it. What's the cost of a built t56 and is it worth doing? I don't know too much about what people do with these cars and I wasn't planning on modding it. Thanks.
