Since you are specifically looking for a Z06 and the best bang for the buck, I would be looking for a 2002. In 2002, the Z06 motor got a makeover and went from 385hp (2001) to 405hp (2002-2004)...

New for 2002 Z06:

LS6 engine (Z06 model) receives 20-horsepower increase, to 405 hp, and 15 foot-pounds more torque for a total of 400 lb-ft of torque

Revised rear shock valving on Z06

Aluminum front stabilizer bar links for Z06

New high performance front brake pads for Z06

Cast aluminum wheels replace forged aluminum on Z06

Head-Up Display (HUD) now standard on Z06

Electron Blue exterior color now available

------------------

New for 2003 Z06:

CRAS child seat hooks

------------------

New for 2004 Z06:

Le Mans Blue Commemorative editions of Z06 available (has carbon fiber hood)

Machine Silver exterior color now available

Revised shock valving on Z06

Happy to help. I should say, look for a 2002-2004. Don't shy away from an 03 or 04 since you may find your best deal there. Just don't start with a 2001 if you want maximum features.

Now, if you are like me and plan on doing a ton of mods, then maybe a 99-00 FRC would be a better choice. You get the Z06 body style with the LS1 (350hp) motor. If you are going to upgrade the suspension and motor anyway, then save the money and get a cheaper car.

The early cars had expensive things like Tire Pressure Minitors and EBCM modules. The later models had better versions of these, easier to service and had the better intakes from the factory. 01' or above is my vote. I would stay away from the Magenetic Ride cars, VERY EXPENSIVE SHOCKS when they finally die (a couple of grand for factory shocks).

F55 and F45 are both ridiculously expensive to replace.

But who actually replaces ANY factory shock for those cars?

Remember, the Z06 doesn't have the targa top. I love driving topless. And I can get 2 sets of clubs with pull carts in my coupe.
There's more to a car than pure performance. And even then, you can mod a coupe to a point where it can wax a Z06.
2cents deposited.

X2. not to mention the 01 Z06 "using oil", something to do with the rings on the '01 Z's. '02 and up is your best choice for the Z06.

X2 on Not getting a 350Z. I worked for Nissan for ~6years.. nice cars but Expencive to modify and hands down the worst bang for the buck in the touring coupe market... But you can get them cheap. The 335 BMW is a sweet car.. going to be the most expencive on the list to buy and maintain.. Great potential, Factory Twin Turbo and with not a lot of mods will make ALOT of power, and handles well from factory.

They are fun to drive but they are about 12k - 20k depending on year (03 to 08). The earlier models 03-06 have less horspower where the 07+ have 306 HP. In comparison a 97 vette with 345 horsepower will cost less and will out perform. Just my 2 cents and good luck.
I owned a m6 06 rev up version 350Z, and It responded to mods pretty good, 350z is not even close to c5 performance, however 370z with a few mods might be close to c5. i tested 370 nismo and found Synchro rev match is awesome!

Syncro Revmatch is pretty sweet. I hear they're doing that on the new Corvettes (or are planning to).

I blip the throttle when I'm driving manuals. But I can see this as being a fantastic thing for when I start teaching my girlfriend how to drive a manual.
