Default Stupid Question

OK this is probably a stupid question, but why do people blur the license plate when they post a picture of their Vette? I mean you drive the car on the road where it is visble to everyone, park in malls, shopping centers and so on, where again it is seem by more people. Are members actually thinking that another member maybe planning to look the plate up and find out where it is kept?

Just asking.

privacy, its amazing what information you can get on the web. When you are out on the streets your plate is only visible to say 15 ppl at a time where online its millions and they are sitting on their computer where they can access that info. idk

My friend has access to a payed web site. He typed in my license plate. He found out how much I payed for it, where I live, etc,,etc,,,etc... Its all about privacy when people cover there license plate.

For the same reason some don't put their hometown on their profile, they're afraid that someone is out to get them!

Not a big problem for me,,I'm still kinda in the stone age when it comes to pics and the computer!! I DO remove address labels before I recycle and other stuff,,guess it's a nasty world in cyber-land!! guess some are more cautious or paranoid, whichever applies!!

Gentlemen, Gentlemen!

Your privacy is gone and has been for some time, you just don't realize it yet.

Today with just a small amount of information just about anything someone wants to find out about you is available. It does not take a license plate number.

I have two daughters both married today. When they were dating, I would go on line to see just who it was they were dating and to be honest to find out how much information I could get on a person.

I am not a hacker by any streach, but also not a beginner, I have been in the IT industry for a lot of years.

The amount of information I was able to get was staggering. Some examples of information besides name and address:

Court records
neighbors
friends and associates
payroll
property owned
place of employment

I found I didn't really need the information on the person I was searching, just the name of a friend of that person.

If someone wants too bad enough they can get just about anything about you.

The scary parts are how fast, some searches took me less than 30 min. Most of the information was free and if I wanted to pay $20 or $30 I could get a lot more!

Privacy, Pooooo it is long gone!

If you post anything about doing race events in your car, then your insurance company may access that if you have a major claim. Also, some auto manufacturers have talked about researching online to find who has done performance mods - and then they can deny warranty claims. There are several reasons that people hide the plate.

The only thing I want to add to what others haver already said, is that it is not necessarily other members that we're concerned about. You don't have to be a member to view the site, it's quite common to see someone post a link to another forum and vice versa. Also, once you post a picture here, it's not just going to stay here. People save them to their computer, post them on other forums, etc. For example, I've seen Toque's pictures posted (not by him) on at least 3 other forums, and even in ads on that auction site.

In reality, some of us just prefer to post as little personal info as possible on the internet. You never know who may be looking.

There's to much information available on the internet and it's accessible from anywhere in the world. If you chose not to protect your privacy, that's your choice...

Just my opinion of course but privacy is an illusion. I think people worry too much about it. Here is an example. If I asked you for your credit card number, would you give it to me? Probably not. BUT, everytime you buy something at the store or online that company or person can see your CC number. My point is that if someone wants to steal your identity or your money it's really not very hard to do unfortunately.
