Is it the Converter???
A buddy of mine works at a VW dealership and they just got a 2001 Corvette for a trade-in a couple weeks ago. Its an automatic with 103,000 miles on it. When the car is started and sitting at idle it has a bad whinning sound coming from the area of the converter. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or might know if the whinning sound is something other than the torque converter. They gave the guy $12,000 on the trade and they took it to auction and they couldnt get rid of it. Also, if it IS the converter, how much does a torque converter run for a C5?
Thanks Guys

Labor to pull and replace it is probably going to be about $700.00.
Fluid and shop supply's $100.
Torque Converter $200 - $800 depending on if you chose original equipment / after market or performance.
So cost to replace at the lower end from a reputable shop would be about $1,000 and about $1,600 on the high end.
Anyways,
the whining sund you hear is most likely not the converter but the transmission pump that gets driven by the converter. Its a vane pump and might be on its way out. I would pull the transmission and inspect the pump.

Where location wise is the noise coming from. I have never have heard of a converter making whine. Could also be bearings in the torque tube.
When I replace mine I installed a Vigilante 2600 stall. I think it ran around $800. Well worth the money.
