You must not have installed any mods on your Vette, or you would know what it refers to.
I learned of it after a 60 dollar plus shipping investment that turned out to be nothing more than garage door weather stripping. There are others out there. From that point forward, I look at what the product is, than check to see how many have purchased the product and are they happy. There is a recent post about a rear license plate frame that is priced at $299.99. That is a Corvette tax.

Most of that 299.00 has to be for research and developement...
Vette Tax is when you buy a part that should cost 10 bucks and you pay 40....
I think that's just a poor consumer decision. We've all done it when we want the latest/greatest must have because it looks so great/sounds so neat from the manufacturers description.
When I see a new product come out, I try to think of ways to duplicate it less expensively myself. Hood seals and air intake systems can be made DIY for less, for example. It may not look as sexy/professional though.
And the truth be told, some Corvette owners are just tight wads...the same type exist in owners/enthusiasts of every other manufacturers as well.
no mods yet,but have several planned..i have been rebuilding my car from an accident..i have bought several parts from dealership and several other from other local companies..some of the dealership parts have been way high and some reasonable...i payed 4 bux for a tail light screw(just because it had a hex head)i mean come on..then 9 bux for a p/s pulley dust cover(the little plastic push pin that goes in the puller hole)..then others,to me have been resonable..then i bought a radiator and condenser for 250 total, from an outside company..guess what, the dealership gets some of thier parts from there also...
they dont, atleast not as much as the others..i was just using those as examples since ive owned atleast one of each and know how expensive the parts are...
The other makes mentioned are european imports and I would expect to pay more for parts...import fees and such...this is an american make with, mostly, american parts...doesn't make sense.....and it's a Corvette
