Default tps sensors

SO after installing new rims last year, and then finally getting around to pulling the tps off the old stock rims, I was getting ready to reinstall the tps's on the new rims.

after reading a thread here on the forum, I can see that my tps's are from 11/96, the original sensors that came with the car.

what I am wondering; is there a way to replace the batteries on these?
They worked fine before but they are probably on their last legs.

If not, can anyone recommend a good vendor to purchase new ones?

I bought new TPMS from the Tire Rack
LUKE (EXT.362) at 888-981-3953 or email luke@tirerack.com

They were $38 each. The price was the best I have seen, however I bought new wheels and tires also.

Sensors for the 97 C5 are more expensive, I believe around 80 to 90 buck a piece!

Is there something that makes the 97 sensors different??

and I am guessing from the lack of comments, and the completely molded nature of these things, that replacing the batteries is not an option.

Yep. The system was different but I don't remember the date they changed. They newer ones are less expensive but are they are not interchangeable.

You can replace them. Do a search in the Tech section. Not the easiest procedure but it works.

The early cars had a different frequency and the receivers will not work with newer (01 and up) sensor. Conversely, newer sensors will not work in the early cars. I believe you can replace the batteries in the early sensors, but not the newer style.

The TPS for '97-'00 are the same and very expensive. The '01-'04 sensors are much less expensive but are not interchangeable unless you change the receiver and your FOBs.

If you are thinking of changing out all four you may want to consider the '01-'04 route. You can buy all four TPS, the receiver and a FOB for as much or less than four '97-'00 TPS.

The batteries can be replaced in your sensors but it is quite a job. You will find good instructions here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-tutorial.html

If you want to do the upgrade this should help:

Another option if you don't care about sensors:

I just got off the phone with Gary at Tire Rack. The current price for '97-'00 sensors is $63.00 each, which is a very good price.

Thanks for all the great info.

I am going to give a call to the local corvette shop and see what prices he has, since I will be going there to get them installed anyway. I'm sure he cant beat that Tire Rack price though...

The sad part is I am doing this to get the car in tip top shape for sale in the next week or so. I will be listing it exclusively here on the forum first. I hate to let her go, but times being what they are, I really have to make the choice to sell her.

Sorry to hear you have to let it go. Good luck with the sale.
