Good advice. I was travelling through Kansas City a few weeks ago in my DD and hit a piece of tire that was in the road. It came flying out from under a car in front of me and I couldn't avoid it. Luckily it hit a piece of my front bumper that could be replaced without having to paint anything.
I've never heard debris refered to as gators. Being from FL I was very interested to read when I first clicked, I'm a little dissappointed that it was just a piece of a tire lol.
My daily commute is on highways very heavy with truck traffic. To see a retread shread in front of you is amazing! the shreaded debris actually get shot out from the force of the wheel and shoots back and high up into the air where it can then then either float back down on the road or into another vehicle like a wounded duck, or it can get shot out like an out of control firework hitting vehicles as far away as 150 feet back. Having seen so many posts about the damage from the debris just lying onthe road, it is a wonder these retreaded truck tires are still legal. Recycling is one thing, but when it can cause extreme property damage and possible injury and death to innocent motorists, it makes one wonder why these recapped truck tires are still allowed on the highways.
I was driving home the other night in my DD and it was a pretty light commute. The car in front of me drove over some road debris (broken plastic molding from a fender bender, etc.) and shot it back into me causing a nice gash in my front fender.
Since the traffic was pretty light, I could not understand why the car in front of me didn't see the crap on the road and avoid it. After it happened, I passed her (on the right ) and saw that she was too busy gabbing on her cell phone. There could have been a sofa on the road, and I don't think she would have seen it.

Before I even got the the next sentence,,,I thought CELL PHONE !! I never cease to be amazed at the number of "mechanized morons" on the road today!! My folks were in the generation that were around for the real development of the auto. The HAD to be more involved with their cars and the actually learned to be DRIVERS!! With this background,,and 35+ years of riding motorcycles,,,you learn to be attentive to what you are doing when behind the wheel!!! Maybe part of getting a drivers license should be minimum of 50% of driving for the first 5 years MUST be on a motorcycle!! Then they MIGHT learn how to motivate with out having their head up their azz,,and actually pay attention to what they are doing,,and what is going on around them as well!!! The Darwin principal would maybe help out there too,,thinning the heard so to speak!!: Couldn't hurt!!!
a couple of years ago i watched a brick fall off a garbage truck 3 cars in front of me it bounced under each car and then nailed me as i changed lanes (it was in a split second) i couldnt avoid it and it did $800 damage to my car, i phoned the city and they told me no garbage trucks were in the area at the time - lying bas****
I always stay back and allow plenty of room. So far so good. This post is a good reminder

I was on my way to NYC one morning and I can see up ahead something long and sticking up from the concrete, I pass it on the far left shoulder, and it's an extension ladder. I speed up and I come upon a pickup loaded with roofing material, and the two guys inside with the music so loud they couldn't here a thing. I motioned for them to pull over and they did. Once stopped I asked if they had a ladder, the one guy looks at the bed racks and says "hay, where's the ladder?" I told him it was about tem miles back down the turnpike. I got in my car and left. Hope no one was hurt by these two num-nuts !
Dang that would wake you up and destroy the car hitting a freaking ladder.
Sorry Neal, I probably would have said alligator if it were the reptile instead of the retread debris. Seems to be the name they give them, 'gator' since they sort of look like a gator laying in the road.
Nighttime makes it more difficult to see the darn things. Just be careful out there folks and give yourself some room.
