Default Radiator Protective Screen

Where is the best place to get the radiator protective screens for underneath the car? Price, quality, and are they worth the money?

Thanks!

There's a lot of vendors who sell custom made grills, But I bought one from Mid-America #618-140 and it's a great screen for keeping trash and leaves out of the Radiator area. It's just galvanized diamond cut and bent screen and it takes about two minutes to install. Couldn't beat the price and it has work great so far. you can get something fancier, but nobody can see it unless they lay down in front of your Vette, so I thought that this was a great buy.

They work to a large degree and probably needs to be on just about all of our rides. You still have to take them off and really clean things out from time to time, but this will save you from the dreaded "Wal-Mart" bag and a total overheat.

Default Rad screen

Call me cheap, but I made my own.

I had some 1/4" galvanized screen material left over from a home project. I cut it to fit with a pair of sheet metal sheers and added a strip of aluminum across the back to stiffen it.

It attaches with the 5 factory screws that hold the front bumper cover to the rad opening. There are extensions of the screen material that fit inside the opening between the bumper cover and the frame on each end.

Took about 30 minutes to make, installs in 5 minutes and seems to work well. BTW, the other day I had backed the car out of the garage and it sat there, running for a couple of minutes while I went back into the garage. The A/C was on and after just a short time the fan kicked on. There was a small tornado under the nose of the car from the fans action. I was very surprised at how powerful the fan is, although it helps to explain why all the leaves, twigs, wrappers and trash end up in the top of the radiator.

I too made mine after I had bought one from one of the vendors here. (That one got damaged)
So simple really to make and install. Yes those fans are really powerful! I had one suck up the "wal-mart" bag and it became wrapped around the fan motor housing and caused $400+ damage

Default Radiator screen

One caution for the DIY'ers.

Do NOT use close mesh window screen! The grid on normal "keep the bugs out" window screen is so tight that it will restrict the air flow.

The minimum size of the opening between the screen wires should be 1/4". That size will still allow some small pieces of debris into the rad opening, but will keep out the larger, "more costly" items.

Picked up a piece of 1/4" galv screen from Lowe's. Spray painted black. Cut to fit with tin snips and spent an afternoon tucking it into place. As I recall, about 5-6 7mm screws holding the front facia in place is where I tucked the screen above (sandwiched between facia and frame). Rear of screen fit back behind plenum. One of my favorite and cheapest mods.
