Dynamat material, do a search on ebay, they sell the stuff by the roll. I have one I was going to use but never did. I may get around to it someday.

Hmmm.... I know you said a low cost alternative but I wanted to chime in with what I did and was quite pleased with the results...

Here's my thread on my sound deadening project... be sure to check out the second installment thread below as it has the most pictures...

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...os-photos.html

As for keeping out interior heat, in addition to the sound deadrning material over the center area, I highly recommend a tunnel plate which made a tremendous difference.

I just did mine last weekend. I buy Fatmat, 50 feet at a time off ebay. I'm on my second roll. It worked outstanding in my car. I did every surface I could touch without removing the seats or carpet. I even covered around the auto shifter plastic and did the bottom of the center console. Heat problem solved under the arm rest. I have pictures, but have no clue how to add them to this post! I covered my doors including the plastic coverings and did inside the doors as well.

That is a good product. Check out Madvette Motorsports for a kit for the C5 - forum member Patches used it on his wife's car - not sure if it is a heat insulator, but it did a good job on the sound.

Yes it does, the black adhesive part is for sound dampening and the aluminum layer is to shield out unwanted heat and cold.

Thanks. Great detail write up. Your link for Phase I/Wheel Wells is not working. Do you have the thread title?

For just heat, you could use something like Frost King. It works very well at blocking heat transmission. I think most of it comes from the center tunnel. It will also block a small amount of sound over 6Khz or so.

Luxury Liner will do an OK job of blocking heat, and will block sound better than anything short of lead. But it's thick, heavy, and expensive.

Dynamat will block a little heat. It's really designed for viscoelastic damping. It's not designed to block noise.

Imagine a tuning fork. You hit it against something and it goes Diiiinininininininining. Dynamat is designed to stop that action.

Although Corvettes are plastic tuning forks, aren't they?

Be careful of people exaggerating the effects of different materials. Even the $4/1lb a square foot heavy material only dents noise. Anything less has no real effect on low frequency noise. *

If you wanted to block low frequency noise with foam, it would need to be a foot thick.

* Automotive engineers know this. If you have gone into the noisy areas of cars you will notice a vinyl layer with foam underneath. This is the same basic concept as Luxury Liner, except LL is considerably more dense.

If you do insist on buying a dynamat like material - STAY AWAY FROM ASPHALT -

There are three quality mats I would be willing to use. I won't touch anything else.

Second Skin Damplifier Pro - Highest quality, expensive.
Dyanamat Extreme - High quality, very expensive.
Raamat - Very good quality, very reasonably priced (And a forum vendor)

I use mostly Raamat and also some Damplifier Pro that I won in a contest.

way too expensive for what it is. go to a local lowe's and buy reflectix. it is like dynamat in application. it is two foil layers around bubble type center. very easy to use and work with. very cost effective. it is used in a/c applications (duct liners/insulation etc). did my entire 78 pacecar and it must have reduced the interior temps a whole bunch.

I installed the Madvette kit over Christmas vacation. It's a pretty good effort to disassemble all the interior and add all the insulation, but it does help reduce noise and heat. 6 months later it's hard to even remember what a pain it was...plus as a bonus you are liable to find some extra pocket change.
