I recently bought an '01 ZO6. It had the factory air box & paper filter but ran very well. I bought a dual-cone CAI, & I think it has killed my low-end torque & also some HP. I've had a ton of performance cars & this is the 2nd ZO6 I've owned, so I'm baffled.
I'm sure this topic has been addressed extensively, & I researched some prior posts, but I have very little free time, so I'm posting with guys that know their sh*t.
Would I be better off with the factory air box w/ a K&N? I'm not going to spend $400 for a CAI.

Any info would be appreciated,

Most affordable (damn near free) is the "Zip Tie" or "Flip Tie" mod that uses the stock air box components...you can search for those. Otherwise, try and pick up a used Vararam for the best results at minimal investment.
Me...I went with the $400 intake, Callaway Honker. Worth every penny IMO.
Vararam here and love it, heard good things about the honker as well, but I went budget. Those two draw air from outside the engine compartment, sure there may be a few other system that do. However; the vararam and honker seem to be the most popular...

You sure you didn't oil up your MAF sensor from the oiled cones and that might be messing up it's readings? Try cleaning it, I think you just spray carb cleaner at it.
If you lost lowend then i guess you gained highend? I guess you can just start launching the car, then you can start in high end and continue at high shifts. -Im kidding.
What are other people saying with VARAAMAMMMAM and K&N?
Ziptie mod is just removing the air box and strapping zip ties to the filter. Takes about 2-3 minutes. I gained a tenth going with a vararam over the zip tie mod in the 1/8mile. I also gained around 1mph.

Then i wonder what can be messing up OP's car.
Wouldn't removing the top of the box be essentially be the same as two CAI cones?
Winter did you get a tune for your intake?
junkyvet, if you still have the original filter can you try putting it back on and see if the computer runs better.
The filters weren't oiled up like the K&N, so I don't think that's an issue. Plus, I felt like it had hindered performance the very first time I drove it after the install. I'm sure HP has suffered too..
I would have already put the stock assembly back on, but I had to modify the black hose that plugs into the factory assembly to fit my dual cone CAI. Can I simply block the hose off?

I think thats the air pump hose. It pumps air into the exhaust from the intake during cold starts for emission purposes.
I don't know if you can remove it without a CEL but i think a lot of people remove them.
Camaros have them too and my buddy ripped his out.
It's not critical for the car running or anything, but in my buddies opinion the AC isn't either. Hell naw, my car gets hot in the footwell area, that AC better be cranking.
So if you want to swap out your intake really quick just to see if the performance hit was from the intake itself, without worrying about the hose.
I ran with the Zip Tie mod for awhile and liked it a lot. But now I am getting the Vararam. I was gonna get the Honker but they are taking way to long to get them into the sponsors shelves. Kinda sad I did all my research and was dead set on the honker but now im liking the vararam for the price and its available.
Replaced the stock air assembly, runs much better. I think the car will be sold tomorrow, so I probably won't put anything on this one, but will on my next one. I'll try the Vararam for sure.
I still don't know why the dual cone design hindered performance. Seems like it was getting plenty of air.

-- sorry for thread hijack here
whats the ziptie mod
Please don't use carb cleaner, thats a good way to ruin the plastic and sensor. Look for throttle body cleaner or a shop solvent.
