Exact same thing happened to me after a fill up. I thought I had bad gas, but broken valve spring. I have 3 extra brand new GM springs if you want them, just pay the shipping. I also made a bunch of valve spring compressors to be used on the car with heads installed. I had no other damage to the valves or the piston. I removed spark plug filled the cylinder with compressed air to keep the valves closed and did the spring swap without any trouble.

Did you ever find out if you had any further damage?

I bet bad gas I had it happen to me years ago. Around me there are a few BP gas stations that are owned privately. The one by my house was adding something to their gas so BP pulled everything that said BP on

I got lucky, there was no more damage than the broken spring. New springs were installed and it now runs like a champ.
