Default Water Temps

I asked over in the tech section and got no replies so I thought I'd try general. I have a 2001 auto coupe. It has heads, cam, fast 92 intake, 90mm throttle body, LG long tubes, Varum intake. Its been tuned and the fans set to come on at 160. My question is I now see water and oil temps around 220. Is that reason for concern or just part of the performance upgrades. I have thought about a better radiator. Any inputs would be great.
Laurence.

160 is too low for the fans.

What * T-stat?

220* is not good!

Under what conditions are you seeing 220? If it's at idle it's pretty normal. If it's while out on the open road it's too high. Is this a change in operating temps since you did the mods? Have you checked for debris caught in the radiator?

The thermostat is 160 degree. 220 is driving around town here in Utah. Outside air temp about 90. I think the fans are set at 160 but I will have to go back and look at the tune. Thanks for the inputs.

That seems very high for those conditions. I live in Tucson and while driving around town this last Wednesday with AC on and with outside temps running around 110 my coolant temps ranged between 196 while moving and 205 when caught in heavy rush hour stop and go traffic.

Too high. I have an iron block, which is hotter running, and run 15-50 oil, which also runs hotter.
180 deg thermostat, fans set to 192, cruising on the highway at 192 and if I romp it for extended periods it will run at 196 and if I romp on it then sit around for a couple minutes it maxes out at 205 but comes back down as soon as I start moving. ambient temps up to 100 lately.
I used to have a coolant leak in my heads and it would get up to 230 at times.

Let me express to you with certainty that your temps are not "unique to your car/mods." they are too high and you have a mechanical problem. if mine can run at 192 then yours should have no problem at all.

Your temps should not be that high when driving around town.

Well I'm back from my road trip and the car ran at about 195 on the freeway there and back. Around town in Twin Falls Id. I still saw high temps ( over 220 ). I don't have any leaks. I have a new 160 degree thermostat in it so I'm baffeled. I have a trans cooler mounted to the front of the radiator could that be it? The system is pretty simple I just don't know where to start. I have noticed a lot of condensation water from the A/C when I stop. I might try and have the collent system flushed and go from there.

I live in sunny Florida. It's 95+ here and I run at 196 normal never above 200 in my DD. The fans come on at 185 and I have a 180 thermostat. I was running higher but found 2 things a leaking collant tank and later a cracked radiator. (145k miles on the old gal)This caused the system to loose pressure and not cool properly. Are you loosing any fluid or is a hose collapsing under pressure?

As far as I can see I'm not loosing any fluid. I've looked while the car is running and haven't noticed a collapsed hose.

With a stock t-stat 195 degree it runs over 200 most of the time its normal. with H/C your making more power and more heat so you need the 160 stat and lower fan settings. I would make shure fans are working properly first and add two bottles of Redline water wetter directly to coolant it helps a lot when making more power. 220 will not hurt a ls but detination will kill it.........

Tranny cooler is blocking flow to the radiator. Make sure have 1" between the tranny cooler and the radiator if you leave it there.

run 30% coolant to 70% distilled water in the summer. If you car is out in the winter subject to sub freezing temps then 50/50 in the winter.

Did you reprogram fans when you did the 160* stat?

Yes the fans were reprogramed. I have the trans cooler right up againest the radiator so I'll find some spacers. I'm runnning 50/50 right now and a bottle of red line water wetter. Thanks for the help.

Yea if you were running the stock tune, tstat, those temps are normal...but with your set up, your coolant should be staying around 185-200. I ran almost identical set up to yours , but no tranny cooler, and hottest my coolant would get on a 95 degree day in traffic would be about 200. While crusing it would drop to 185. Both my fans came on at 180 or 175 I believe with my tune.
