Ok, so I was driving just fine, all guages fine, oil pressure, temp, etc. Then the engine just died. Pulled over to side of road, checked oil, wasn't really low everything looked good. Wouldn't start. If i give it the gas, it kinda started, sounded like it was running on like 1 or 2 cylinders or something, but just died.
I think the engine died at the same time I hit the cruise control at about 60mph.
So, any ideas?
This was friday and I didn't have time to mess with it so I had it towed...
Battery is pretty new, probably 6 months or so. My car seems to go through them pretty quick, within a year or so. If I don't drive it in 4-5 days, it will be dead. I took it to the dealership, they couldn't find anything. I took the alternator in and it checked out fine.
I was thinking it could be the crankshaft position sensor. We had a car that would shut off randomly while driving a few weeks ago. It shut down a couple times. When we would try to start it, it sounded like it got to the point where it was about to start but wouldnt. We took it to the mechanic and they said it was the crankshaft position sensor and replaced it. Since then it's been running fine. I'm not sure if that's the same problem with your car, but it's worth looking into.
Ohhh, fuel pump. Good one. I didn't think of fuel. I guess that stupid thing is in the fuel tank, too, huh? I guess I'm gonna have to have the dealer run diags on it and see... Crap.

Im assuming you didnt run out of gas ....and yes, the pump is in the tank....You should be able to hear the pump run....without cranking the engine, turn the key on....You should hear a humming from the fuel tank for about 5 seconds..If you dont hear a humming noise there's a good chance your fuel pump is toast....How many miles on the car??

Yes, plenty of gas,3/4 or so tank. I'll have to check to see if I can hear it run then. It's only got 69K miles on it. Non stop issues though, little things... No engine problems though.
First, pull up your codes. Second, have you done anything under the hood lately? Third, check the ground strap on the back of the dirvers side head. If that one comes loose, or broken, it will **** down the engine.

Sounds like fuel pump, You say it trys to start when you crank it and give it gas, Good sign of bad fuel pump.
Someone said battery, I don't think so seeing it cranks over.
Do you have any codes?
Here is how to pull your codes.

Thanks for that URL... I'm a new C5 owner... this will come in handy if I ever need it. As for the OP good luck on this... keep us posted.
Get the fuel pressure and volume checked. Check to make sure the ignition is firing correctly. Go from there. It might be a fuel pump, but it could be a lot of other things. Make sure you have plenty of fuel delivery first.
Dont go replacing parts until you are sure of the cause.
Ok, so the dealer just got back to me. They said that the Cat Converters are clogged??? Wierd. It wasn't having any performance issues, only 69K miles. I can't really believe that the cat's are bad already.

You might do a search, Seeing that the cats are part of the emissions they have a lot longer warranty.
I believe it is 8 years or 80K, Seeing you have a 2002 you need to see what your In service date is.
