Has anyone made a custom mount for their radar detector? The only one I can find hangs from the rear view mirror and I don't really like that one. So I'm thnking I'll have to custom build one. Anyone have any ideas or pics?

Your other options are
- windshield suction cup by dash (traditonal and cheap, but ugly)
- Visor mount
Custom mount idea:
Your inner visor mount uses a 7mm screw. You could use this as a mounting point and have a sturdy stealth mount.
the problem with the the first one, i don't have a valentine or bell radar detector, so not sure it will work.
i saw the C6 one the other day. but i can't find a version for the C5. so i'm afraid i'm going to have to try to fabricate something. and i'm really not in the mood to do that right now....
I tried different types of radar mounts and didn't like any of them. The radar detector would bounce and that bugged me. So I made one and had it mounted using the sunviser screw on the passenger side. It was rock solid and didn't move at all. Instead of the radar detector hanging from something, I made a mount that the detector sat on. Put some velcro on the detector and the mount and was good to go. Had the detector hardwired, so when I turned the key it was on. It was pretty much out of sight and did the job. I used a longer screw for the sunviser and a spacer, 3/4" or so. The spacer was just a top off a black magic marker with a hole drilled for the mounting screw. I used a spacer so that the detector was just below the blue shading on the windshield. That worked just fine for years.

that's exactly what i'm thinking about making. i guess i'm going to have to wander around Lowe's and see what i can find. how did you hardwire it? i'm planning to do that also and i have an idea, but curious what others have done.
Do A search on radar installation, plenty of info there. I ran the wire to the fuse box under the carpet on passenger side. Alot of guys get the Invisicord and wire it into the rearview mirror. The mount I made is one piece, but could be made from a couple of pieces. It started out as a piece of 2" x 6" x 1/8" thick aluminum tubing. The hole you see on the platform was made so that I could run a screwdriver through it to attach the mounting screw. I was using a Bel RX 65 detector. Now I have the concealed version, the Bel RX 75 Pro.
I keep mine on the visor in two cars (one's a vette) by slipping onto the visor a knee support elastic bandage (medium or large depending on visor) purchased for under $10 dollars at a sporting goods store. Both are black.
For the Valentine 1 goes on top of the visor with the detector slipped snugly inside ( large size knee support) and has a small hole cut in it so I can see the arrows for ahead or back and alarm numbers, the hole is sewn/reinforced, power is mirror fed, very stealth.
On the other car the Escort 8500 is underneath the visor (inside the sleeve) and not visible and is powered by a switch mounted underneath the dash and wire hidden as it goes up the post/mouldings to visor. Totally stealth.
I primarly go by audio signals on both but can look at the Valentine visuals.
Any one looking through the side/back window, even with a flashlight, will rarely be able to detect my detectors. Can use with targa top off. Flip visor down to level as needed.
PS - also slip my call phone in there, better reception being higher up and its close to bluetooth unit, again, good hiding place.
