2000 A4. Removing engine from the top. All unbolted but won't come out more than an inch. I removed the three bolts from the flexplate to the flywheel. Is that all there is?

What to do to unstick coupling?

Make sure that you loosened the collar on the torque tube spline. On the A4's there is and access hole (rubber) in the bell housing. Pop it off and loosen the bolt (Spline Shaft). You might have to rotate the enging to get access. I believe it's a 10MM Hex off the top of my head.

You're also going to have to drop the front cradle some so that the balancer clears the steering rack.

So baisically the spline is the only real diisconnection ppoint> Do the fllywheel and flexplate stay connected together when I transfer them to the new engine?

Automatics only have a flex plate. The flexplate is bolted to the crank.

The A4's transfer power via the torque tube to the converter in the rear.

Flywheels are only used in manual transmissions.

Just install the flex plate on the new motor and you should be good to go.

On my setup there is a flexplate bolted to the ring ring grare withe three bolts. The is also a collar of 8 bolts in the center which appear to connect the flexplat to the tube. i am just trying to clarify which connections hold the TT to the engine so that I can remove them.

That is called the spline lock. You only need to remove the 10MM hex bolt. Once that is remove the torque tube is free.

The spline shaft and flex plate should remain together and not be taken apart as they are a balanced unit.

Good luck with your project. What are your plans?

If I was still in the Tinley area, I would definitely want to come by and lend a hand, lend a wrench, whatever to learn more about a project like this.
