Default Service Steering Column Lock

Hey Forum,

I'm new to the site and I just recently bought a 1999 Convertible Corvette. I've been reading a lot of forums about the vettes regarding the notorious "leaky butt" and the "steering column lock" issues. I'm loving the vette except for a few minor issues like the tire monitoring system and the dual climate control. Not a big issue.

Here comes the big issue that I've encountered today. I took the vette out today and headed to the beach. Drive was great but when I started the car to leave, it displayed "pull key out, wait for 10 sec". I did as i was told and upon restarting the car, it displayed "Service Steering column lock". I know that I either have the CLB or the plate removed by dealer because I can turn the steering wheel with the car off.

When I attempt to put the car in drive or reverse, the car dies after a few second. I can restart the car again in park and the same alert was back. After attempting to restart and shut off for 1.5 hours, the code then disappeared and all was normal again. I was able to drive 80 kms back home.

I know the bypass or plate has been done. Wut could be causing this malfunction? My battery voltage is fine too. Any thoughts? thanks for your help.

Thanks 8VETTE7 for your detail comment. I've purchased the CLB from Corvette Houston and I'm going to change the battery as well. hopefully it will resolve the issue.
