I had the EXACT same problem and I put 2 bottles of Techron in my tank and 10 minutes later my gauge started functioning properly. I put a bottle in every other month and I've had no problems for about 2 years now
I'm on my 3rd bottle of Techron and hope this does it. But if not, who makes this Seafoam stuff?
I'm not sure of the "maker" but you can get it at any parts store and Walmart also carries it. You can also clean your whole motor also with it. Type in "Seafoam" lots of great info here. If you do ingest it into the motor to clean everything up be prepared to see ALOT of smoke. I recommend you do it at night so the fire department doesn't think your area is burning down lol.
Took me a couple tankfulls of Techron to clear up my issue. One suggestion-get a 20oz bottle and put 1/2 in when you start filling your and the second 1/2 when it's almost full. That will insure that you techron in each of the tanks. I assume that it gets mixed around but this is what I heard on the forum here as a good approach.
