After having my PCV system replaced 650 miles ago to supposedly fix the oil consumption problem, I still managed to burn another quart of oil. Now the dealer is going to replace the rings on tuesday.
Is there anything I should ask or tell the dealer? Does anyone know what the general procedure is for replacing the rings? Anyone have this done and have it not fix the problem?
Q: Is there anything I should ask or tell the dealer?
A: Ask him if he's done any and talk to those owners. Failing that, ask him not to screw it up.
Q: Does anyone know what the general procedure is for replacing the rings?
A: I've seen pics (tried to find them) where they dropped the entire front suspension cradle and engine from the bottom of the car. Pictures were not for the faint of heart.
Q: Anyone have this done and have it not fix the problem?
A: Same guy with the pics later reported it was all for not. I've read some responses where the dealer said they stopped doing them because it didn't work. Others report the fix worked fine.
My car was done this past week by the dealer by leaving the block in the car. They have now done 12-14 Zs and found it unnecessary to drop the engine. It took them 2-1/2 days. There have been no callbacks on the ones done to date. Everything appears to be well done on my car. Just the #2 compression rings and expanders rings were replaced. Now time will tell on the oil burning.
That's is what amazes me... GOLD72 says his dealer has done 12-14 Zs... there have been other people that have given me similar numbers for their dealers...
If every dealer can say they have done at least a few with the high volume dealers doing the 12-14... just how many LS1/LS6s REALLY have this issue?
12-14 Zs!!! Some dealers didn't even get that many Zs allocated to them in one year!

Zoomin, some of the "FIXES", that did not work, have been "DONE OVER", and found to have been "FIXED INCORRECTLY", as in, rings gaps not spaced correctly.
Also, the prime (One of) suspects in the ring use issue, has been the fact that at rpm the "Ring Flutter", causes the rings to "MOVE", and thus causes the rings to align improperly......so you have a "Straight Through", effect of sorts on the oil............
Another "Theory", is that the bores are too large, out of spec, and NO ring will seat because of an UNDERSIZE condition.......so, you put NEW rings IN, and you have an oversize jug.........presto...........same problem as before....... :(
i had my z done back in feb at 3600 mi.at that point i never got more than 450 miles out of a qt.my dealer had done 5 before mine.when i got it back i put in a quart after 250 miles.i never got through the next one because i traded it for a 02 z06.in my opinion( own my own auto repair business and am a certified mechanic ) the car must be completely disassembled and the motor dropped out and put on an engine stand to be repaired correctly.the master tech and his helper took 32 hours to finish the job.same tech did the other 5 cars.anything less is unsatisfactory.the reason others are taking short cuts is gm is only paying the dealer 19 hours of labor time for the job.the dealer has to absorb the extra time.if you want any additional info, you can reach me at my business on monday.919-782-0649 woody
c5, Amen brother.....see my post JUST above your's......
I am with you 100%, the way you described the "FIX", is the ONLY proper way for it to be done.......ONCE and for ALL.
Until the GENERAL, bellies up to the bar and gets these engines rebuilt the correct way, the re-ring is just a glass of water thrown on a housefire........a JOKE :mad
Don - I may very well have misquoted my dealer when he may have actually meant that a total of 12-14 LS6 and LS1 engines have been re-ringed to date. It is possible that he may be doing re-rings on cars he did not sell based upon the reputation of his service dept. I have been very happy with their work on three separate warranty repairs to date including last week's major surgery.
Someone recently suggested the number of Z06s having oil burning at 6%. Based upon folks I have corresponded with who have never publicly posted a problem with their car, I suspect that the number burning a quart in 2000 miles or less may be 3 or 4 times greater than 6%!! Just my gut feeling since many have simply decided to live with it and be silent.
I think I've heard here about the type of rings you're supossed to use to fix it right. There's a specific rings for the Z06 that will fix the problem. It may have been LPE I've heard it from.
Went to see how ring job was going. They had only just gotten started. Manifold was off. I could see oil around the intake ports. The picture below doesn't quite show how wet the oil looked.
