Hey guys, first post for me on this forum! I picked up a 2004 QS Z in February to serve mainly as a track car, and have been loving this car ever since!
However, this past weekend, I was driving on the high way. I heard some loud slapping noise coming from under the hood. I few moments later, my power steering went out, and my coolant was overheating. I pulled off the highway and noticed that the belt that runs the water pump, power steering, and alternator had completely let go. I found shreds of it everywhere.
I had it flatbedded to my friend's shop. He took a good look at it and said that the harmonic balancer that's connected to the crank pulley was wobbly/loose, causing the belt to deteriorate rather quickly. Anyone had a similar experience? Know how much this is going to run me to get it fixed? Thanks in advance...
I had the same thing happen to my '04 Z back in 2006. The belt was shredded. I had it flatbedded to the dealership and they replaced the belt with a new one under warranty, so I have no idea on repair costs. Also, they didn't mention anything about the harmonic balancer being loose so don't know the actual cause. But I've put 25K miles on it since then and have had no problems. In any case, it shouldn't be very expensive or complicated.
Pretty common occurrence. Dont replace the harmonic balancer with a stock unit. Get a nice aftermarket one while youre at it. Its a fairly involved job and requires the steering rack to be removed. Heres one alot of us use, including myself. https://texas-speed.com/shop/item.as...d=629&catid=20
I personally will only install an ATI dampener from now on... I briefly had a powerbond on my 01 Z/28..must have been out of balance as it caused a random misfire(flashing SES, confirmed with scanner) under WOT acceleration, the misfire cleared up when I put the stock dampener back on. I went to an ATI 10" underdrive after that fiasco and had no issues...When I put a cam in this car, an ATI will be going on in place of the stocker as well....
