Its tough to do this "cheap". You can splice into the bus inside the head unit and add a jack that can be picked up at the shack. I wouldnt do it though.
This is what I'll eventually do, it's sold by freecomwireless but unfortunately you can't get it through any of our vendors here. It allows you to get digital sound in, a USB plug for charging and keep the 12 disk changer functionality. This one will not allow Ipod control from the head unit.

if none of the above options work for ya just go all out and get a double din kenwood and load all your MP3s to a USB flash drive and control your music directly from the head unit.
a little more expensive but it's the best way to do it.

you need the pxdp for ipod use to directly plug in to the head unit.
pxdp with the pxhgm4 hanress will plug into the back of the radio
Will this work if I have the Aoem-vet1 installed for output to my subwoofer??? Sorry I can't remember if the AOEM-VET1 adapter plugged into the same harness.

yes
the aoemvet1 and the pxdp units can both be used at the back of the head unit
I sit my iPod on the dashboard above the radio, (the dashboard is flat). and it usually stays up without a problem. The real issue is the FM reception is nearly perfect. I compared what I had on my iPod to a CD and the CD sounded slightly better, but the quality of the tracks on the iPod may not have been that great.
Let's just say I am 100% happy with the "iTrip" $49.99, it plugs into your iPod with no wires what so ever (runs off battery). And the sound comes in perfectly clear, and I'll tell you, I've tried at least 3-5 different FM transmitters and this one is the only one without distortion or high pitched noise. It works 100% to my satisfaction.
I plan on actually putting Velcro on the dashboard to put the iPod. and if I ever go on a road trip get the car charger (costs extra).
I know this is anything other than an FM transmitter, but just plug it in, no wires, sit it on the dash and you golden. Clear reception.

I tried this and I have to tell you t is a royal pain to use, I gave it away.
I bought the iPod hookup from Dennis and it is the way to go, For 89 bucks it is well worth it, I use my iTouch with it. Great sound.
Why go cheap when it comes to music?
