Ran Dragon's Tail yesterday! It was absolutely the most fun I've had in a car since high school!!! Vette handled like a dream, flat in the corners and came out like a a rocket...
It was the first time I've been able to do any rather agressive driving in the Vette and it makes you hungry for more!
Stayed at Fontana Resort near Fontana Dam...will go back and soon - Pictures from Fontana Dam area.

You really need to go - a lot of really great roads to run - lots of cars and bikes up there on the weekend, be careful. They had an accident last Sunday, someone came around a curve and went across the line - Think they were on a bike....
Made two trips there now and it is my favorite road to drive fast on!! Last time we were up it was still closed on the TN end and you had to come in from NC. Both the troopers were at Deal's Gap eating and some motorcycles that had just came all the way thru said there were no other ones working so we got to run it pretty hard and we had a blast!! Of course on the return trip thru they were coming thru the dip area which is my favorite curve on the whole road and the radar detectors started screaming, so we sorta backed off and run medium speed the rest of the way. Love the Dragon!!

You're right, it was closed from a rock slide - it opened the day before we got there and being in the middle of the week, there wasn't much traffice at all. Several bikers, but they were fine. in fact on Harley was right behind me, I'd lose him in the curves and (with a Miata in front of me) he'd catch me a bit on the straights but we were both enjoying the run. He gave me a thumbs up at the overlook.
Welcome to our part of the world.
Just a little hint, if you want to enjoy the dragon without all the kiddies on their crotch rockets, try doing it the middle of the week. On weekends sometimes you get stop and watch them scrape a wannabe racer off the side of the road. The Cherahala (SP?) parkway is great too, longer more sweeping curves, great scenery and higher (pretty much unmonitored) speeds..Few if any bikers too, not that bikers are bad, but some think the dragon belongs to them and them alone.

You're 100% on, Steve. We did the Dragon, Cherahala parkway, in fact, made the big loop from Fontana around the parkway and back to Fontana on Wednesday. Saw Tennessee officer, other than that, it was clear sailing.
Our only issue was the heat (around 92 at lower elevations, but around 77 on the parkway.
If you go in October, avoid the weekends as much as possible. We were up last year on Halloween weekend and the leaves were still beautiful and we went through early on Sunday morning leaving and there was no traffic. On 129 on the way out we passed tons of cars coming in and most of them were family cars coming through to look at the leaves. If you want to drive 20 behind the leaf watchers get ready to do it or run early in the morning and beat them all.
