A4 2001 Coupe 73k miles, had the transmission and rear end fluid serviced a few months ago (maintenance). They just dropped the pan, cleaned it up and replaced the filter (think it was the kevlar one not the paper one) and refilled (so it wasnt a complete flush).
Stupid me, I assumed they would use the factory fluid.
When done I asked about what fluid was used, it was a long discussion and try as I may I never got a straight answer. Been bothering me so I called back today, same discussion, little more info but Im still not comfortable, let me know what you think.
M Which fluid did you put in my car ?
T We use a regular Dextron 3 fluid, to that we add an additive package that brings it up to Dex 5.
M Ok, what brand fluid and what brand additive?
T Its just bulk Dex 3 ATF
M So you dont know the brand?
T Doesnt work like that, bulk fluid isnt branded like you see in the auto parts store. Could be one of several, any I use meets or exceeds standards.
M the additive?
T The additive is Lube Guard (Platinum), when added to the bulk Dex 3 it becomes Dex 5, with that additive you are absolutely covered.
Second long discussion, they do a lot of high end cars, a lot of vettes, they cant take a chance on screwing up the fluid or the transmissions.
Car is shifting fine, no slipping, no noise, trans temp is good.
Sounds like your annoying the crap out of the shop... It sounds like they did the job right, even if they tell you they ordered ACME brand ATF will that change anything? I don't think so.
This post means that you have an automatic and you should finish that gender thing you are in the middle of!!!!

But thank you for your help with my question.
And this is just stupidly funny! Nice one Jistari!
If it was me, I would do a little research on the additive they claim to have used, and see what it actually is and does.
If that satisfied my mind, I wouldn't worry about it. If it didn't, I would take it back and make them drain and refill with the proper fluid.
Oh well, I thought we might have more people who have their trannies serviced at other than a dealer and would care to state if this seemed like a common practice.
