I have an 01 coupe with the telescoping steering wheel/column. Recently I have been hearing a noise from the column that sounds like a gear skipping a tooth. Its a noticeable pop and I can feel it in the steering wheel. It sounds like it is generated close to the steering wheel and NOT down by the firewall. It makes this noise no matter where I telescope the column and does it louder when turning right than when left. Any suggestions on what is causing this noise?
Well my steering locked up on me today and I almost wrecked it! Thank god I put a lot of muscle into it and broke something in the column. I can hear pieces rattling in there now and the steering wheel wobbles from side to side but not up and down. I'm going to have to take it apart and diagnose the situation I guess. It still drives and steers but the wheel is loose... Any ideas?
I just bought a 2001 Vette and was searching on this exact topic after talking to a Vette mechanic who advised me to check with a Chevy dealer to make sure there were no recalls on Vettes with dash-mounted starters. Apparently this mechanic just worked on a 98 Vette that the steering wheel locked up while the car was traveling at 45 mph. The owner also heard a popping/clicking noise right before the thing locked up. I guess there is a problem not only with the Vettes, but also Impalas and Cobalts (a guy in Pittsburgh was killed when his steering wheel locked up on him while traveling on the interstate). I am sure you have had the problem checked by now, but in case you haven't...I'd call a Chevy dealer and ask about the problem. It's been noted with the NTSB in some cases. Heck, I'm afraid to drive my vette now and I've only had it a week!
Good luck!
