Yes, I use the K&N filter in my Z16. In fact I have either K&N or S&B cotton gauze filters in all of my vehicles (AZ dust).
The rubber seal that's included with the drop in filter needs to be used to maintain a tight seal and allow the lid to remain tightly clamped.
You don't need to spend $60 for them new when you can find them gently used for half that price in the classifieds.
They'll last a lifetime which is the big benefit. Don't expect big horsepower increases from the filter. A gauze filter that requires oil still needs to be cleaned/re-oiled regularly. I do mine with each oil change, but I've seen some owners comment they haven't cleaned theirs in 50k miles...which is negligence IMO. Most enthusiasts wouldn't allow any filter to go that long.
And don't oil them until the media is clean and completely dry. Apply the oil sparingly at the top of the pleats and allow it to wick down. Over oiling may contaminate the MAF and cause erratic performance and codes.

I have the tripple cone K & N filter on my 1996. The most positive thing is that they can be cleaned so you're not buying new/replacing them.....you buy them once.
I've got the K&N filter and the K&N open airbox cover....the plus side is..you never have to by another filter and if you drive your car daily or quite often there might be some long term savings over the disposable filters.....Since I don't drive my car for 4-5 winter months...who knows if I'm really saving anything or not.....
No diff. Now and then you will see consumer mags discuss this very same topic of which they conclude there is no diff. But I know buyers like to think their decison making is superior to others
I have the K&N on all three of our cars, they have no performance gains but I figure I've saved on filter replacement on each for the last 4 years so it they have now paid for themselves.
