I have been to quite a few shows. Sometimes I wonder how they can justify the winners. I like the shows though. You get to meet a bunch of fellow corvette owners, talk BS and see some really nice cars. I have to admit, the best one I have been to was in Guilford Ct. (I'm not just saying this because I took home a trophy).
I also go to a lot of car shows. There are different type of judged events. Looks like you went to a clean and shine event. I like the type that are judged by ballots from other participants (peoples choice). These guys know and appreciate what effort has gone into the cars. The judges on clean and shine events are looking for dirt/grease or ware on places where a new or low mileage cars don't have any. I do keep my car clean but some events are a couple hours away and I can't wash it when I get there so I know I will probably not win. Go to peoples choice events.
I enjoy car shows just to hang out with friends and family. If I win, great. If not, who cares. Generally the shows I go to is for a good cause. I will agree however that a lot of them are rigged. I always said they should have two distinct categories: "Garage Queens" and "Daily Drivers". Then you can break it out into wheels, engine, blah blah blah.

Garage Queen and Daily Driver I like that. And maybe one more
I just bought It, category.
i used to be really in to car shows and had taken my completely done up Chrysler 300c to many many many shows. i usually took best of class, best paint, and sometimes best of show. but one show in particular sticks in my mind. a little Podunk show held by a small, and i mean small local car club (i was the president of a chapter of a world wide car club) anyways my 300c lost to a stock 2006 impala ls with 20" rims.. as a matter of fact all the winners were from this car club that hosted the show. that was just an absolutely horrible car show.
If you think local car shows are bad try the "World Of Wheels" in-door shows. I entered my highly modified 29 Ford roadster in a "World Of Wheels" show. I got second place in my class of 8 cars. After the awards were handed out a judge came up to me and told me I actually had the best car and the reason for the other guy winning was he needed the points for that class in this region, and then would be able to enter the "World Of Wheels Grand Finale" show....totally political BS.... That was the end of my car showing days.
