Subject:

Yellow: Traction Control/Handling Lamp On and Driver Info Center Displays Service Active Hndlg (Handling) (Repair/Reprogram ABS Module)

Models:

2001-2002 Chevrolet Corvette Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 25106536

This bulletin is being revised to add an additional model year and revise the text. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-05-25-004 (Section - 05 Brakes).

Condition

Some customers may comment that the "Yellow" message, "Service Traction Active Handling", is illuminated on the Driver Information Center. The technician may find chassis DTC C1288 - Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES) Steering Wheel Sensor Phase A and B. When this code is set, the VSES is turned off, ABS and TCS remain operational.

Correction

Verify the Techline equipment has been updated with TIS software 12 or newer. If it has not been updated, do so now. This software was broadcast to dealerships on 11 /13/01. Disc Number 12 will be mailed November 14,2001.

1. Install the scan tool to the vehicle.
2. Enter the chassis applications.
3. Select F1: ABS/TCS/VSES.
4. Select F4: ID Information.
5. Select Fl: Controller Information 2.

5.1. If the DE Calibration P/N is not 12220685, it will be necessary to update the ABS module.

5.2. If the calibration is already 12220605, refer to the Service Manual, Brakes, Antilock Brake System, Diagnostic Information and Procedures, DTC 1288, SI2000 Document ID 670707.

Important:
The update cannot be performed until fuse # 25 (Body Control Module-Ignition 1, Instrument Panel Control) 10 amp is removed from the instrument panel fuse block which is located on the passenger side of the vehicle (under the instrument panel and under the toe board).

Without removal of the fuse (prior to requesting information), unsuccessful reprogramming may occur.

6. Power down the scan tool.
7. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key.
8. Remove fuse # 25, (Body Control Module-Ignition 1, Instrument Panel Control) 10 amp.
9. Using the scan tool, perform the usual SPS reprogramming of the ABS module.
10. Power down the scan tool.
11. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key.
12. Replace fuse # 25, (Body Control Module-Ignition 1, Instrument Panel Control) 10 amp.
13. Verify the ABS DE Calibration P/N. If it is not P/N 12220685, redo the SPS programing procedure listed above.
14. Clear the codes from all the modules.

I got that "Service Active Handling" on my 2004 a while back. I was pulling into fast traffic on a wet road. Got a little sideways and car was doing its thing, keeping me pointed where I was steering. I was probably doing more of the "old school steer into the skid" than I needed to ... and then I just got out of the throttle. Display came on and remainded on until next time I stopped and restarted engine. Never did check codes and they've been reset since. I marked it down to my dumb driving confused the computer.

C1288 = steering wheel position sensor...At least in my case it did. Replaced the sensor under warranty, and no more codes.

Default Check the 4 pin connector on the sensor

On the left side of the steering column just a little ways from the firewall is the 4 pin connector that plugs into the steering wheel position sensor. Unplug it and replug it in 3 or 4 times and that may solve it.

I have a 2001 and it did the same thing and did the plug thing and it never came back. I asked a friend who is a service writer at the Chevy dealer my car came from and he told me that the actual sensor going bad is very rare and usually it is a dirty connector. Usually if the code has a H behind it when you check codes it is a history code and the sensor may be fine just lost connection for a split second and it will set the 1288 code. If the code has a C behind it then most likely it is the sensor and it needs to be replaced. Involves removing the steering column and runs around $350-400 parts and labor depending how much your dealership likes you.

C6's were having a problem with the same thing on the vehicles with a telescopic wheel. The fix from GM was installing a small clip on the plug to prevent the connector from loosing contact. They never did acknowledge a similar problem on the C5's.

Did the code go away or is it still there? I think I've thrown this one before too but I'll have to check...if so, it was gone quick and probably due to a little "spirited" driving..

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I have reset the codes, did some spirited driving and it came back. It does have an H after code. Next move checking connections.
