Default C5 overheating?

My 2002 manual coupe coolant temp runs 195 +/- at highway speeds but in city driving, moves up to 220-230 degrees. I've had the system flushed and radiator checked with nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas?

I'm not an expert on this, but with my 2002, during the summer months here in Southern California, I have reached 225-235 during highway driving.

I would double check the fans are coming on correctly. Turn the AC on, I beleive they should both turn on right away (someone confirm this for me?)

And if you crawl under and look way up into the front radiator area, it generally catches a lot of crap you can't see from under the hood. Clean that out real good.

Make sure it hasn't sucked up a plastic bag or something on the radiator.

Where are you located? If you're somewhere it gets hot, those temps aren't unheard of in certain driving conditions. Yesterday on the beltway I hit 227 in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour in 95+ degree weather...

As someone already said, crawl underneath and check out the area right up against the radiator for debris.

Good advice here. If you are in heavy stop and go traffic, those temps are really not all that unusual.

Seem like normal temps to me. I presume that once you start driving the temps come back down although you did not state that.

Here are the normal turn on temps for the fans:

The low speed cooling fan mode is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan mode is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan mode will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph). Both fans run in either high speed mode or low speed mode.

The temps you quoted are in line with the range of temps where the low speed mode operates. (219 - 234 degrees)

You should be concerned when the temps are in the high speed mode of operation range or above in traffic.
