Do all Z06's exhibit the transmission rattle (in neutral with the clutch pedal up)? I know a number of forum members have said that their cars have this noise but do all of them?
I'd like to hear from someone who thinks that their Z transmission is quiet, especially if you have heard the noise in another Z and are sure that it does not exist in yours.
Is the rattle worse in a Z than in a regualr C5?
I haven't taken mine back to the dealer yet to ask about the rattle. In any other car this noise would be completely unacceptable. What is GM's official explaination for the noise. They must have a bulletin that that instructs their dealers how to explain to the customer that the noise is normal but I have not seen anyone post the official GM explaination.
(The video talks about a normal noise when the car is starting out in first - This is not the noise I hear).
The rattle (clanging, clunking, banging) is more noticable in my 2002 Z06 than my former 2001 convertible. The transmission is in the back and the shifter rails have a long way to go through a metal tunnel to get to it. Its going to make some noise and is the price you pay for the near 50/50 front to back balance.

I've had mine about a week and it makes noises. There is a 2001 in the neighborhood, it makes noise.
Do I necessary like it? No. But I realize its not a Lexus. It is a brutal car built with a purpose. Every car I've owned, or still own that will lay down a 12.50, or better, 1/4 mile pass has attitude. The Z is not any different from my short time with it.
Lots of noises come out of the Z06. It sounds like you're referring to the famous 'marbles in a can' sound, which is typical for the Z06. Mine's normally not too noticeable unless I'm close to a buliding or something else that bounces the sound back at me. In general I keep the clutch disengaged when idling at a stop light. Then there's also the noise you describe when taking off, and there's the clicky sound around 1800 RPM that sounds like valve clatter but which is probably the injectors ... etc etc. And of course, on the right kind of pavement, the tires can produce enough noise to drown out the exhaust, the wind noise and the stereo.
Drive it 'til it breaks. Then worry about the noises. Enjoy. Seriously, you might use the forum locator to find a couple of Z06s in your area. Then you could compare yours to a couple of other cars.
