Default Changing rear end gears

Thinking of changing rear end from 2.73 to 3.14, I have a A4 . Would like to know if I can keep the same housing or do I have to change? Also will I notice some increase in preformance? Any thoughts on how expensive it would be? Thanking you in advance.

I would recommend going to a 3.42 Rear. The 2.73-3.15 is not that big of a difference in my opinion and wouldn't be worth the effort. I went from 2.73 to 3.42 and so for it has been the best seat of the pants improvement I have done.

Go with the 3.42's - much better performance gain.

Depends on what kind of "performance" you are talking about.

Straight line acceleration....already fast enough.

Gas mileage......suffers

Are all of you guys just swapping the whole carrier? Anyone have luck changing just the gears out? I know jawsgears makes a thick set 3.73 that will fit in the 2 series carrier. I am only considering this because 3.42's seem to be going for 500-750 lately and then install and tune will run another 500+. Its only like 200-250 for the 3.73, then just have them installed.

I had 3.73 in an lt1 h/c trans am and LOVED it.
