Perhaps have a compression test done on your engine. I had a Ford Probe once upon a time that had a bad head gasket and the MPG kept getting less and less. I sold it when it was getting 22mpg on the highway, then the new owner replaced the head gasket, and it got 30mpg after that.
Do you have white or black smoke coming from the exhaust? The smoke would be most noticeable when you accelerate.
My '04 CE A4 gets 26 - 27 on the freeway. I installed K&N filter a while back, that seemed to increase milage from 25 - 26 to where it is now. Don't know if was K&N or just time to change the filter.

I have an A4 with 3.15 gears and on the highway with cc set I get about 28-29 mpg, In town I get about 19-20. That is figuring it with gals used and miles driven on a 450 mile trip.
Here's a link to a trip we took in our stock '04, A4, 3.15 rear end Cpe. Included 80 mph speed on I-10, blasting over 100mph at one point and tooling around the Rio Grande river and the town of Fredericksburg, Texas on the way home. I was happy with the mileage.
My vette has big power and I always get tremendous fuel savings.
I stopped by the local parts store and bought a Burmese Fuel
Snake; put it in the tank and my fuel mileage is great. Try it!!

I have gotten 30 MPG on a couple of long trips with a 2000 a4 vert.
I don't creep along either.
try some experiments,
fill youu tank
reset the gauges
drive at 70 mph for 15 minutes.
note the RPM's (that'll tell you if the engine is running efficiently
Compare your mileage and RPM's to some of the claims here.
Those RPM readings will be a real clue..
my stock 2000 gets around 28-30mpg with the a/c running on the interstate. fwiw i saw a mod on another website of adding a rear bellypan to a c5 and they saw improvement of 1-1.5mpg with it.
Your milage diffinately sounds low. I have 700 hp, a 2800 stall TC and Z06 3.42 gears with a FLP Level IV A4 and I still get 23 on the freeway cruising 75 mph with some spirited runs.
I have found the DIC to be Completely Accurate on our car.
When i check the average miles per gallon on the DIC versus miles driven and gallons used it always ends up the Same or never more than + or - .2 difference.

You have to be the only one then. There are too many variables for it to be the same as doing miles and gals used.
Mine always reads more mpg than i actually got.

Mine too,,,it's usually about 1.5 mpg "happy"!! I think new wires and Delco Iridiums would be a wise investment regardless,,,It can't hurt,,and you would know you are good in that department for a long time in the future!!
I think it also depends on the terrain, my stock A4 usually gets 25-26 on the freeway(70mph) 19-20 in town, came back from Petaluma to Sac recently and got 29 going 75-80....go figure

Nope and i am not the only one. I have discussed this on the C5 AND C6 forums and there are Many others who have the same results. As i said i check it on the DIC and then against miles driven and gallons used. I use the same gas station and usually the same pump so the readings are Very accurate.
I have seen the same MPG drop on my car the past couple years. I am now down to 13.5 average. I have new air cleaner, cleaned MAF and Throttle body, new Iridium Plugs with GM red wires.
Next step for me is to try replacing the front O2 sensors to see if that helps. After 10 years they are probably trashed (but no codes).
