I just installed a MGW shifter this afternoon. I only drovethe car a couple of miles but it felt stiff to me. I guess that I was used to the slop in the GM shifter.
Will this one loosen up over time or does it take getting used to?
Both. It will loosen and you will get use to the greater effort required due to the shorter throws. The only real issue I had with mine when I first installed it was the effort required to move into the 5-6 gate and reverse. After about two weeks of daily driving it either loosened or I got use to it. Either way it's certainly not a problem now, quite the opposite. I wouldn't give mine up for anything.
I compared my friends MGW to my RSD shifter... The MGW is definitely a lot stiffer and shorter. I wouldn't have a problem getting used to it, but it's certainly not as stiff as my old shifter on my other Z06. The MGW on my friend's car was on there for about a 6 months before I tried it out... I don't know if it got any looser, but it certainly needed more effort than my shifter.
I have a B&M Ripper. Ive had it in the car for about 9 years and 70,000 miles..I simply love it.. no slop side to side like the OEM shifter.. short throw, perfect height for my rested arm on the console.. Very precise shifts. I don't even know if they make this shifter anymore,,,

I currently have an MGW and I must say that I am disappointed with it. I modified the OEM by removing the rubber bushing and shortening it and really liked it. It was nowhere near as stiff and had equally short throws. I only changed because of all the hype I read on the forum.
I may put the OEM back in or get a C6 Z06 shifter.

What has this to do with a MGW shifter?
I wish I had your problem! My boots are fine but the steering is not and no one has a solution, including two Dealers.
the wetness could just be water if the boots are cracked. dry them out and put some rubber sealent on the cracks.
