Default Stall converter

how do you pick the right converter? ive been searching for one and when i read their specs i have no idea what the F**k they're talking about! lol i read stuff like 9.5 inch non lock up, lock up, 10.5 inch tripple disk etc.

so my car is a DD. with 3.15 gears soon to be 3.42. ill be going with a ~228/232 cam in the future. i do not drag race but i do some spirited driving. so what converter would you get?

You just give them your car specs and they match your converter. easy!

lockup is for mileage, to retain drivability like stock

multiple disks are for high power

Got mine from RPM transmissions.

Based on your specs and usage, I would stay away from a high stall which is only good for drag racing and is a slush box on the street. I went with the Mike Mercury torque converter. It's an oem coverter out of an astro van. Before you start laughing, do the research like I did, and you'll be thrilled with the result. Do a search and you will find the perfect stall for your usage.

I don't agree completely with the statement above. The part I don't agree with is that high stall converters are only good for the strip. Might agree if your talking 4000 +

It really depends on what you classify as a high stall converter? 2400, 2800, 3200, 3600, Etc. Also the brand makes a difference. Some are tighter and some are looser. I can only comment on what I know so here goes:

I have a Yank SS3200 in my 02 Vert. It's coupled to a RPM level IV A4 and RPM 3:42 gears. I bought the Yank because of the recommendation of my mechanic. I told him I wanted close to stock drivability but with some punch! He told me Yank was a fairly tight converter so I went with it.

I can tell you that I think he was dead on! I really don't notice the negatives (slippage) of a typical high stall converter. I does take a few more RPM's to get rolling but boy when you give it a decent amount of throttle you had better hold on and be good at keeping your car under control. Best set of the pants bang for the buck in my opinion.

With that said I have heard rave reviews of the converter Mike Mercury recommends. Tim is a knowledgeable guy and I'm sure everything he says about it is spot on.

The astro van stall gives 400-600 rpms above stock, not much but enough for a mild cam like gm hotcam kit. And no trans cooler needed!!

I went with the 2800 stall with my mods. Mods are A4 ECS built, ECS supercharger, ARH headers, Corsa exhaust and the 3.42 Z06 carrier. Runs great both around town and when you get on it.

Im going to be changing out my trans for an RPM and I am also changing my stall, I have an ECS blower cam and headers and a supercharger is going in next spring. I don't want to high of a stall, because when the boost kicks in, I dont want to be taking a long dirt nap! I am thinking of a yank 2800, what are your thoughts.

My car is an A4 as well, do you loose control when you are WOT, This is a fear I am having when the S/C goes in.

The rear tires will break loose much easier now. If I hit passing gear the rear gets squirrely. I'm replacing them with Nitto NT-05 tires which are much more sticky than the Michelin RF's that are on it now. Definately a lot more power.

depend on the combo its rated between 3800-4200. on the transbrake mine was right at 4200. your best bet is to call chris and talk to him directly about your setup and what you are looking for.
