Default DieHard Platinum question

It's getting seriously close to time for a new battery. My choices are down to an Optime RT or a DieHard Platinum. Here's the question...My 2004 Coupe calls for a GM "86" size group (top post only) and no Platinum shows in that size. If I search for a 2003 ("75" size group) Coupe, the Platinum model that is available is called a "75/86DT". I suspect that the "86DT" is a compatible match for the "86" group. Anyone have a "75/86DT" in your 2004?

Thanks in advance guys...I love this forum! - C.A.

Forget the RT. I replaced two of them and so did two of my friends. If you want the platinum that's up to you but IMO the diehard gold is a great battery and you save $140.

Can't help you with sizes but I am running a Platinum in my 2000. IMHO stay away from the Optimum. I had one before i move to the Platinum and was very disappointed with overall performance and capacity. Platinum is pricey but I haven't been disappointed yet.

Platinum would be a great choice. Why get a second best die hard?
The C/5 loves to eat batteries. Put a very good one in there.

Everyone has a different story. I have a Optima Red Top and it's never had a problem with it. But again I've never let it go dead without being hooked up to a float charger. The Sears Platinum from what I hear is a great battery, a little too heavy for me, but I bought the Optima out of fear of having a leak in the battery, which would distroy the wiring harness and the ECPM which sits directly below the battery mount. But it's your call. Good luck !

I have the DieHard Platinum P-3.
It works like a champ for me (almost 2 yrs so far), and the casing I have read is reinforced compared to other casings. I only drive my car on nice weekends. My car very often sits 7-14 days between driving. I have never had a trickle charger in it either.
Sure its expensive but I don't do anything cheap on my car. My car is more than worth it to me.

Yes Toque! This exactly what I was looking for! I see that you too have a 2004. I wanted to be sure that the Platinum would fit in my 2004 year model. I just ordered mine from the (store name not mentioned) website. It's on sale today for $15 off of $195 plus 10% additional if you order online today. Total driveout (pun intended) with TT&L was $172.48, with free pickup at a local (store name not mentioned). Thanks again.

Please don't misunderstand me, I didn't say it would leak, I'm sure it's a perfect battery. But for me, I'll stick with a 75/25 Optima Red Top. But I wish you well with your platinum.

My only recommendation is....

The battery tray on our car's is a smooth plastic. The battery is also plastic. I made the mistake of not tightening down the battery clamp enough and the battery would slide a little from side to side under hard turning situations. I thought my suspension had a problem... . What I did was lay down some 3M double sided tape on the bottom of the battery, then drop it in, then tighten down the battery clamp. Its in there FIRM now.....

Learn from my mistake...

Die Hard Platinum for me also, but dont get the one Sears has in their computer for the C5 (the P3) get the P4.

Either one will work, but the P3 is smaller, may slide around on the tray and has a 90 Reserve Capacity, the C5 calls for a 100> Reserve Capacity (which the P4 has, and it fits the tray).

Read down to the battery part in this thread for the link that supports the reserve capacity requirement.

Pick up a battery mat that goes down under the battery b-4 u install the new battery. Extra insurance. Suggest u also use a trickle charger like a Ctek 3300. I believe again this is extra insurance but will extend battery life & possible headaches if u don't drive the Vette for a while. fyi some of the leaking side post battery issues were due to over tightning of the fastners...Good Luck!

I bought the P-4 this weekend after my Delco died. The P-4 fits the tray perfectly.

I know you didn't mention it, but I have a WalMart Maxx battery. It's holding up great, powering two 1000W amps. Just make sure you upgrade your big three and this battery will last you. Also, if it ever dies, they replace it, no questions asked. And there are a lot more WalMarts than Sears Auto Centers (Sears hardware don't carry Platinums in my area).

This is why I didn't get the platinum. To me adding weight to a sports car is the wrong awnser.

If I can afford the best, maybe I can afford to swap the lighter one as necessary?

You are absolutely right about the weight......I think the Red Top I had was like 38 lbs and the DHP I have now is 53 lbs, its a brick

But from what I've researched, I was looking for one with a Reserve Capacity of 100>, I think the extra lead in the DHP has something to do with the added RC it has.

I do read that many people have absolutely no problem with the lighter Red Tops (I went through two) and even other less expensive ones (like the Walmart) and Im glad its working out for them

For me, just wanted to have the extra cusion (battery performance wise) and see the extra weight as about the same as two and a half gallons of gas

Thank you Jis! After reading your post, I did a little homework and found that the P1 DH Platinum would also fit my 2004. I returned the P4 and left with the P1 (880 CCA, 135 RA). As it turns out, the P1 has the same footprint as the P4, but is a Top-Post only (2004 models moved to Top-Post only batteries). It could not fit in the tray more perfectly! I liked the way it looked without having the needless Side-Post option/add-on look. Thanks again for your tip. Without your suggestion, I would have never thought that another size Platinum might fit better.
