Default column lock on c5 ...........again.

Please indulge me. After reading most of the posts on this fix still not completely clear on latest. My understanding is that on an automatic 97 C5 which has not been touched yet complete fix is based on removing column lock plate. GM is saying it should take about 50 minutes . Steering wheel lock will then be disabled which is fine with me. Is that accurate?
Thanks

I feel I need to also respond to this thread. I have had my C-5 two weeks as of today Sunday. Its a '99 6spd manual. I have no idea if the Column Lock on my car was ever delt with by anyone. Being the 3rd owner now the previous owner who only owned the car a little over a year as he purchased it in June of 2009 didn't think it was ever delt with. So far so good. Do you think GM will still honor the recall on my car if it wasn't brought in when it may of been recalled? I am pretty much confused over this myself I have to admit based on all the threads I have read about it in the last 2 weeks. At this point I really don't know what to do.

The removal of the column lock plate will prevent the column from physically locking. However, assuming you are correct and the car has NEVER had a GM recall service done to it, the dealer will want to reprogram the PCM to set a fuel shutoff of 2 mph. While the column can no longer lock, you CAN and MOST LIKELY will get bit by the fuel shutoff somewhere down the road. Tell the dealer you have a custom tune and that he is NOT to reprogram the PCM. They may or may not want to agree to that. But insist that they not touch the PCM.
