What's best, Steam or the ammonia and plastic bag method? I used our Search feature and also called a few tint shops in the Indianapolis area. One wanted $300.00 but guaranteed that the defroster would work. Said they used hot soapy water. Another shop started mentioning razor blades, no guranty but only $100.00. I'm thinking of buying a steamer and doing in myself.
You can peel and use hot soapy water with razor blades on the side glass....the plastic bag method works best on the defrost rear window just avoid any scraping at all on the defrost lines

I hate the smell of ammonia and didn't want to chance getting any of it on the interior of my car. I used a steamer that's made for removing wallpaper and it worked like a charm.

You can probably rent a steamer at most home improvement/hardware stores...

Local shop here uses steam to remove the tint. I've not seen them do it or tried it myself, so not sure just how hard it is and what precautions to take if you attempt it.

I had my side windows tinted and one had a lighter tint than I was getting so the glass shop had his girlfriend working with him and she use a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of Ammonia and water and start with a corner and spray a little into the peeled back section and it comes right off. She striped the window tint, (Be careful if you have leather interior) she covered everything with brown paper to keep the ammonia off the door panels. They did a fantastic job I got 15% tint and it cost $125.00 for both windows.
Gala makes a tint remover sultion that is chep and works good. Get some razor blades and scrape the tint film off,the spray the remover on and it soften the adhesive so that it can be scraped off with razor. Then clean with class cleaner. You can buy this a most major part store chains for less that 10 dollars. It takes some time but works very well. I have used it may times. Good Luck!
