spray can seems kind of sketchy to try on some really expensive wheels...maybe worthwhile to find a busted wheel for $20 at a junkyard, paint it, and see how it comes out

That would be my feeling too. If it were me, I'd spend the extra $'s and have it done professionally. But if you try the spray can routine, post up the pics.
I wanted to do the center spokes of my 505's in black chrom, which is about the same, but finally decided not to, and went with matte black paint.
I will say, aluminum is really hard to paint, and requires meticulous prep work. I would really do your homework on how to paint alum. before you start!!
And I see no reason why you could not do a good job with a rattle can, they're wheels, they're gonna get nicked up from rocks/debris and dirty anyway!!

if they're bare aluminum, just degrease the bejesus out of them, lightly scuff them with sandpaper and shoot etch primer first...
If they're painted, just degrease them, scuff them up a bit with sandpaper, ie 400 and paint them...
Personally, I wouldn't do it and if I were going to, I would use much better paint or have them powder coated. You can get black chrome, chrome, etc.. paints in urethanes, it's expensive, but it'll hold up a lot better and have much higher gloss. imho
Chrome in a can, it won't come out right at all, i know iv'e tried it before, but im no pro painter, so good luck, try it on something else first, see how it comes out!.
