Just cracked a front wheel on my 2001 coupe with factory thin spokes. Car has only about 44000 miles, never raced or driven hard. Luckily the tps told me that the wheel was leaking and had to pull off of Rt. 95 in Milford, Ct. on my way back to the east end of long island,NY local Chevy dealer found me a new wheel but now I'm leery of the others cracking and I my wife won't even get in the car again. I need to replace all four wheels and want to know what the strongest and most reasonable wheels would be. I'm very worried about going with aluminum again and would a steel wheel be a stronger/better choice? any advice will be greatly appreciated.
What kind of wheel was it? Polished Alcoa or the painted Speedlines?
I sold my 02 Alcoa polished thinspokes; I understand they are prone to cracking; Very happy with OEM forged Z06 Alcoa rims and non runflat tires instead. I had the Z06 rims painted silver with polished rims, spokes and clear coated; they look
The same thing happened to my 00' thin spokes a month or two ago. I don't even remember hitting a pothole are a big bump. It is a complete mystery why this happened. Plus right towards the end of the spoke, wierd. I just bought a used pair of ccw t-10s and got them on the car.
Here is an important question for those with cracked thin spokes. Did you have your tires replaced? If you did, it is very possible that they were damaged during the tire replacement. This can be caused when they break the bead. If they do not allow the tire to deflate completely (takes over 1 minute with TPMSs) and/or don't put the shovel near the rim the spokes can be damaged. Be careful when selecting a place to replace your tires.
This is a known problem caused by the runflat tires that have no give to them, I had my orig 02 wheels and orig tires and had a stress crack in the wheel, at the time my cars fact warr had just expired, I fought w/gm for 6mos, they did eventually give me a new wheel. This is a very known problem, i also had the polished wheels, they now reside in my garage, and ccw's 505a's reside on the vette.
