Default Question about TPM sensors

I'm getting ready to put new tires on my 2001 Corvette and I am wondering if I should be replacing the tire pressure sensors? They are the original ones and I have not had any problems with them but they are 9 years old. I think I have heard here on the forum that there is a battery in them? Should I just replace the battery? Does anyone know what type and number the batteries are? Any information would be appreciated. http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...ies/smile5.gif

Yes - the tpm's have batteries in them. But they are not intended to be changed, when the battery is gone you should be replacing the whole tpm. I believe there were some folks that were changing out the older generation tpm batteries ('97 - '00), but I don't recall hearing that there was anyone sucessfully changing out the newer style like yours. I'm sure that someone will prove me wrong and jump in to tell us that they have changed out the newer batteries.

Personally - if I knew mine were original ten year old tpm's - and I was about to change wheels and/or tires, I would be inclined to replace the tpm's too.

The cost of four sensors is at least $160, So why replace them if they are working? My 03' has three of the original four, as I recently replaced one of the front sensors. My tire dealer (America's tire) simply broke the bead near the sensor, popped it out, installed the new one and charged me Zero. I re-programmed the sensors, and all are working fine.

The sensors are near end of life after 9 years. Never heard of a battery being replaced on the newer style sensors. The newer style (2001 - 2004) are significantly less expensive than are the older style. Replace them while the tires are off the rims for the new tires and avoid a significant expense when they fail shortly after you have new tires mounted.

I plan on replacing mine when I ever find new wheels and tires.

I put new tires on my 03 early in the year. I went ahead and replaced the sensors with new ones from GM Parts House. Now I don't have to think about that again.

They're very inexpensive from Gene Culley and they've about met their life being `01s. I just replaced mine on my `01 vert with the new wheels and tires.
