I recently experienced a windshield wiper malfunction. The wipers would not shut off. Fortunately I read some posts on this forum. However, I took the following steps much to my satisfaction.
The wipers ran. I understood the problem was that moisture occurred in the motor housing and that resulted in the malfunction. There are 3 rubber utters that I removed at the base of the motor housing. There was moisture in the housing and a minimal amount of debre. Since the motor continued to run, I was reluctant to pull the motor. I thought if the motor was running then the controller (circuit board) was probably the problem.
I pulled the fuse so that I could continue to drive in blue sky conditions and hoped that the curcuit board would dry out and the wipers would return to normal operation.
This did not happen overnight, but it did happen. My wipers are now operating normally.
I hope that this information is helpful to someone who finds themselves in a similar situation.
The utters are easily removed by hand, no tools. They can be also easily replaced by hand when the curcuit dries out.
Debris: Leaves, dirt, Apparently the motor housing is situated so that water and other dirt can run off from the base of the windshield.
GM aware of this placed 3 rubber drain ports (utters) at the base of the motor housing. I guess that the logic was that water could pass through, but nothing (mice) could enter from the bottom side. However this housing can collect debris that would retain moisture in the housing.
i had the same problem...only difference was the housing where the brushes are on the motor has 2 little bolts that where loose , i cleaned the inside and tightened them up and after about 2 days they started working properly....great forum tons of info
