Default Dads 2000 vs. My 2004

I have a 2004 Corvette vert with 73,000 miles on it. My Dad has a 2000 corvette vert with 49,000 miles on it. Both cars are 6 speeds. My dads corvette has the following mods: K & N air filter, Borla exhaust & c6 shifter plus a very very aggressive dyno tune. Car is fast. My 2004 is completely stock.

Just today my dad told my he wants to sell his car and he really wants me to have it. His car was the influnce to me to purchase my car. It would be an even swap. Since he has all these mods, should I make this swap.

My dad brought his car about 6 years ago, when he brought it a new clutch was installed, clutch has about 20,000 miles on it, my car still has its original clutch. So that is positive.

Dads car needs tires, my tires are like new, I would probably swap those out. Can the rims and tires be swapped out from both cars? Will the tire sensors still work??

What do you guys think...

I'd hardly call a so-so air filter, catback, shifter and a little tuning "all these mods." You make it sound like he has a blower, forged bottom end, fat cam and long tubes.

A 2004 corvette has a lot of under the skin improvements over the 2000.

And I don't understand... Your dad wants to trade cars with you?
Or you want to buy his car and sell yours?

Your car is worth a good $5-7000 more.

He takes your car and you take his and he gets way more money. Problem is many buyers cannot get a loan for an 00 but they can for an 04 and there were numerous changes on the 01+ making those cars more desirable. You'd definitely be getting hosed on the deal.

'under the skin improvements over the 2000'

Like the recall notice I got for the fuel leak, and the gas gauge that goes to empty every time I full up the car.

If you're really interested in downgrading and throwing away 7 grand, I'm not going to stop you

The fuel gauge problem is not confined to just the '04 model year - all C5s have been effected by that issue. And the '04 does have a lot of upgrades from the '00 model.

Yes, the rims can be switched, but the tire pressure sensors will not work on either car if you do the swap. Sensors for the '97-00 are the same and '01-04 are the same.

You can do what you want, but if it were me, I'd pass on the deal. Your '04 is worth much more than the '00 - you'd be taking quite a hit in the pocketbook. The mods your Dad's car has on it add little, if any true value to the car.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

There is no way I would trade him a 2004 for a 2000, You would be getting the short end of the deal, All the mods you listed don't amount to much. Keep your car it is worth more and mod it.

Do you want his car? If it's calling your name and your car isn't doing anything for you, do want makes you and your Dad happy. As far as value comparasions go, you lose on that aspect, but emotional aspects you may come out ahead cause you and your Dad have a bond over these cars. So do what you want and forget about asking for opinions from a bunch of strangers. It's your call, so be strong and stand by your decisions in the face of what everyone else thinks.

Very well put. Thank you for understanding my emotional side of this post. Its not the value, its the love. You must be real close to your dad to send a nice reply like this.

If there is one thing I have learned in my 28 years on the Earth is there are two things you never do.

1. Never mix business with family.
2. In business transactions you leave emotions at the door.

This transaction is a bad idea all around in my opinion. My dad died at 54 when I Was 24 years old and we were close. If I had offered him this deal he would have told me to get a life and deal with my own car and leave his alone.

Like most here, I don't think it's a great idea.

For about $1k you could do those mods to your car and end up better in the long run.

2004= ls6 manifold 2000=ls1 manifold..2004 is a much better choice..that is the lastest c5 model out..2000 is when chevy was still trying to make improvments on the c5..why get rid of an 04 and get a car 4 years older just because it has basic boltons? not a good choice..stick to the 04 and mod it yourself =)

Keep the 2004, it has the latest technology in it - even the 2004 has the LS6 block which has stronger metal in it -

Check out the numbers and you will see what I am talking about, the block has the LS6 number, you do have the LS1 cam and Heads though!

Take what mods you can from his Vette and put your stock stuff on his, his resale value will remain the same- exhaust, K&N etc and get yours tuned too!

Keep your Vette - '04 is better

Thanks,Matt

Intelligently and from a common sense perspective.....don't do it. Doesn't make a lot of sense. From an emotional standpoint......I saw your comments earlier. Tough situation. I would chat with your dad and discuss the feedback you've received and see where it goes from there. I'm sure he is going to want you to do the right thing and not come out on the losing end of things. Good luck and keep us posted.
