[Z06] Hammer Cam in LS6?
http://www.corvettemuseum.com/specs/...haftvs2001.pdf
That's only a gain of .016 lift and 2 degrees of duration from what is in the '02 LS6 motor now. Meanwhile, the lobe centers being a degree narrower, coupled with the small 2 degree increase in duration, will compound to trim low end torque from greater cylinder pressure losses at low to mid range engine speeds (1.5 degrees greater overlap between intake and exhaust), to gain a small amount of top-end power (greater lift and duration). While the cam would produce a very significant gain in the LS1 engine, it would appear it's not going to be much of an improvement in the LS6, if any.
One could get the same gains than the cam proposed, by installing a set of 1.55:1 rocker arms on the stock LS6 cam/valvetrain, and not loose as much low-end power. Maybe sell the cam to someone with an LS1, buy higher ratio rockers, and pocket the change?
Are there other characteristics of the aftermarket cam that make it attractive, such as ramp design (assymetircal for example, or steeper approach angles)?
In any case, considering the small difference between the two cams, it would appear the stock valvetrain should easily be capable of handling the aftermarket cam. Would be interesting to get ahold of the LS6 spring spex, as they must be substantial. The one issue to consider is, the aftermarket competition springs are not designed to operate the '02 LS6's lighter weight valves. Further, the hollow valve stems may not be able to withstand spring rates designed for the heavier, solid stem valves used in the LS1.
I would approach this with some caution untill I knew more about the specifications involved. Broken valve stems are pretty ugly failures!
Just caught that the crate motor proposed is an '01 LS6 (doh!), in which case the cam proposed will be a substantial improvement over stock. Further, the increase in lift would suggest the stock valvetrain is probably not adequate. Further, considering the '01 LS6 valves are solid, the comp springs should also be used. In all, with the slightly lower CR of 10.1:1 vs. the '02 at 10.5:1, it would appear the '01 LS6 motor with the Hammer cam, coupled with the '02 intake upgrades (MAF sensor), and some software, could produce very similar power output in the high mid to upper RPM range to the '02 LS6. Nice upgrade to an LS1 car to be sure!
What a difference a year makes. Sorry 'bout that... :)
