The lid is double hinged....pull it towards you and then up. A little lube on the hinge won't hurt it either. And before you say what a crummy design it is - understand that it was intended to be able to open it half way with the top down and not blow everything out of it. I think it's ingenious myself.
Oh and BTW - search would have given you at least dozens of threads.
Now that you know how to open it fully, I still agree with your original post above.
Other than my IPOD cable, not much fits inside. Hard to believe it was originally designed to hold about 4 cassette tapes...remember them?

Yes I remember them and I also remember $.50 Premium gasoline
Actually that hinge design was made to be compliant with potential DOT safety standards. we were thinking ahead of compliance with this design which was done late 1996 and ready for the launch in 97.. it was designed to keep anything inside the consol from being a potential projectile in a collision. That's the real deal.

I remember premium @ 22 cents back in 1949 18 cents for regular. It was 21/9 for regular, and 29/9 for premium in the early 60's . It didnt go to 50 cents until the oil embargo. early 70's
Sure, I recall .50 P gas. I also recall regular at .37 a gallon when I filled my Surburban's three tanks as I moved out of Texas bound for Oregon many decades ago

i guess i must be really old, lol. when i was first driving, regular was 19 9/10 and if you had a friend at the sunoco station you could get them to "break the lock" on their octane selector pumps and supposedly get 100 octane (oh, yeah, that one cost you a whopping 24 9/10), lol. "regular" premium was 23 9/10
oh, and for the record, your (and all of ours) consol "glove box" is almost totally useless to answer your question directly.

Brings back memories!!! Dads car out cruising for chicks,,had to bring it home with as much gas as when I left. You actually MOVED the gas gauge with a dollars worth of regular!! Back then the gallons 1/10 wheel spun in a blur while the dollar and cents wheels slowly rolled around!!You ran around all night on a dollars worth,,getting 15cent McDonalds burgers!! Guess we are showing our age,,, and I remember Paul McCartney's ORIGINAL band when it first became known in the USA!!

Yes and 19 cent cheesburgers, and 15 cent fries, you could get two cheese burgers fries and a black and white shake for a dollar... and who could forget.

DANG!!!! I can remember 35 cent Premium!
Gas wars of the 60's and 70's.. I remember selling my 65 Vette and buying a new 74 Honda CIVIC.. (flame suit on) We had the even / odd gas lines in Los Angeles and some stations limited everyone to 5 gallons!
My 65 Vette was always in the TV show "Adam 12". IT was parked on Chandler Blvd near the railroad tracks and they would always film Reed and Malloy driving down that street at the beginning of the show! Almost makes me cry watching TV Land!:o
Ah the days of cheep gas- however I worked on a farm in the blazing Kansas heat, putting up hay and running tractors. I made 2 bucks an hour and was the highest paid of anyone. The farmer I worked for also kept me on a very rigid time line and if I took a fifteen minute break I was not paid for it. Builds good character though. Also convinced me to move and go to college!!!
